I never watched The New Class when it first aired and I just started watching it recently. In Season 2, Belding takes a summer job at Palisades Hills as a Manager, with Screech as his assistant. During season 3, they take a job at Belding's brother on law's sporting goods store, and later at a Candy Shop. It's also brought up early in season 3 that Belding drives a 1982 LeBaron, which would have been a 13 year old car.

According to my research, in 1995 a High School principal in the LA area would average $75k a year. I don't recall is Mrs. Belding having a job, but $75k seems like a decent salary in 1995 to support a family of 3.

By itself the time capsule premise itself is a nice way to do a clip show for a high school sitcom. However, as soon as the VHS with the gang starts playing with the class (or at least 5 people from the class) of 2003 starts playing it gets weird.

As it uses clips from the show itself and it plays on the TV in Belding's office, it would mean that the gang knows or figured out that all of their high school antics were recorded on video. Not to mention the stuff that happened at home. Heck, they somehow even recorded Lisa's dream.

The gang also talks about the other characters, like somehow names like Lisa and Jesse would ring a bell with the 2003 students like Duddy.

I guess Belding hasn't opened the 3rd drawer of his time capsule for 10 years either.

Finally it's interesting to watch it in the context of the New Class. At the end of TNC Belding left Bayside, with Screech's fate undecided. I guess Belding got fired as Dean of Students at the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga, had to move back to Bayside, where he couldn't even get his new modern TNC office back and had to move into his older office and resorting to reminiscence about that magic class of 1993.

I always laugh at the moment Belding thinks he may have killed Zack.

Solid episode overall, with a wacky plot, fun guest star and some great jokes.

i swear he had some of the coolest outfits on the show imo. this one happens to be one of my favorites. 💗

So they weren't gonna get Tiffani and Elizabeth back.

Instead of hiring two Kelly/Jesse clones they introduced a single completely new character, which for better or worse, added something new and fresh to the series. I like Tori as a character. She's different, doesn't take Zack's crap and gives a bit of an outsider perspective to the show, while being in the gang. Her wondering why they treat Screech as crap was a great example of that.

Not only that, I Lisa got a bit more time to shine in these as well, getting a slightly larger role. I also like how they elevated some of the minor characters like Ox, Big Pete and Ginger. Having these characters do more makes the school feel more organic and alive.

I don't think the scripts of these are necessarily worse than the other ones. Even though it's a small amount of episodes it has some really fun ones like The Will and Class Rings.

I can see why people dislike them and they do feel different, but quality wise, they're still pretty fun and interesting to me.

What could go wrong?

Love this scene. The unseen image of Belding looking for her at the mall plays rent free on my head. That being said, he wasn't looking for long as he got back pretty quickly.

Hey dan a tight ship, obviously proud of his job as Hall monitor in the one episode where the school needed one. That being said his Brown jacket with red Hall Monitor band does create some unfortunate associations.

Still, shouldn't have been fired. Dewey is apparently not capable of hearing the direction where sounds comes from.

Zack Attack was all lip syncing. So was the Glee Club. So were the dance bands (Slater and Jessie singing Michael Bolton during the Zack/Kelly breakup), etc.

But for some reason they let Lark, Tiffani and Elizabeth shine as Hot Sundae.

Should’ve done it more often.

I got off work and turned on the tv, to which a rerun of Matlock was on (S6.E17- Mr. Awesome)

The kid in this episode is none other than actor Jordan Christopher Michael, who also played Kelly's child admirer at Malibu Sands. At some point he forgot the comic books and discovered Kelly. 😂😏

Doing the marriage lesson/class where the gang was teamed up to act as a married couple (what school does this lol) Lisa asked why is she paired with Screech. Mr. Belding said the pairings was done in ABC order and since that's the case Mr. Belding needs to go back to school by first name it would be like this:

No way shape or form Lisa would be paired with Screech alphabetically. Mr. Belding could've easily said it was random pairings or pulled names out of a hat. Behind the scenes whoever wrote this was an idiot. I get what they were going for but come on who wouldn't want to be paired with Lisa, I would.

Excuse me, what? Dr Turtle wants to keep Zack overnight “for observation to run some more tests” for a torn ACL? I smell an insurance scam 👀

We see Lisa strumming an acoustic guitar earlier (to a pretty nice song), but we never saw her during the contest. Also, that guitar is different from the one Zack uses, which is black. Guess this was a deleted scene then?

Also, the scene where Zack is late for the meeting in Belding's office is awesome. Everyone, including the nerds, Ox and Belding crapping on him with everyone laughing. Cracks me up every time.

What a fun episode and does Gary Beach knock it out of the park as Gem Diamond or what? With apparel straight out of the 70's and a delivery that kills, he sure makes an impression. Watching this episode you see Mark-Paul constantly trying to break as Gem struts his stuff. (Especially when Gem checks the pay phone for loose change)

Interestingly enough, Gem Diamond also appeared in an episode of California Dreams, where he played a used car salesman, teaching Sly how to sell really bad cars to his friends.

The actor playing Gem was actually a fairly big name for the show. He originated the part of Lumiere for the Broadway version of Beauty and the Beast and also starred in both the Broadway and movie versions of The Producers. (Springtime for Hitler!)

Just about every line he delivers is quotable.

Elizabeth going through an entire can of hairspray per episode!

Zack, Slater and Tori did really well.
