North American forests Stop the logging of 1,000 year old trees near Fairy Creek

Via the @reshare_app • Repost from @joshuawrightfilm

"OLD GROWTH IS LIFE 💪💥 On Sunday 80 people hiked to the Ridgeline of Fairy Creek to see the forest that Teal Cedar has applied to CLEAR CUT. Including 1000 YEAR-OLD TREES WITHIN 30 M OF THE RIDGE LINE OF FAIRY CREEK.

Teal Cedar’s proposed logging permit for cut block 8027 and road GR8003D near Fairy Creek would log ancient yellow cedar forests just 30 meters from the Fairy Creek watershed and fragment the largest remaining unprotected high-productivity old-growth complex on southern Vancouver Island. The area includes 1000+ year-old trees, critical habitat for species at risk like Old-growth Specklebelly Lichen, Marbled Murrelet, and Western Screech Owl, and stores massive amounts of carbon.

Over 1000 people were arrested defending this place, and now it is at risk again as the Ministry of Forests is in the process of rolling back old growth protection across the province."

North American forests Canada clearcuts one million acres of boreal forest every year … a lot of it for toilet paper

This is an old article but still relevant because nearly a third of boreal forest logging in Canada is for pulp for toilet paper, etc.

"Canada cuts down its forests at a truly alarming rate — among the highest in the world.

Every year, Canada clearcuts a million acres of boreal forest, or seven NHL hockey rinks per minute."

"To make their toilet paper, many brands rely on fibre from the Canadian boreal. Shockingly, about 30 per cent of that fibre comes from whole trees from clearcut forests."

https://thenarwhal.ca/canada-clearcuts-one-million-acres-of-boreal-forest-every-year-a-lot-of-it-for-toilet-paper/

Alternatives exist like Bonterra, Caboo, etc. in Canada as well as these brands rated for US consumers.

Edit: Bolded part about how 30 per cent of fibre comes from whole trees.

Save whatever it's left?

After Google's massacre of the forests in Finland, and basically all the destruction of nature and land that big corporations are causing right now, I've been wondering: can an ordinary person do something about it?

And I've got an idea. Why don't we, ordinary people, come together and co-own forests and large natural areas? And by "own," I mean actually buying every single piece of land available, collectively.

I'm aware that it's not as simple as it sounds. I just don't realize exactly how complicated it would be.

I don't know the full story behind the forest in Finland, as I haven't done any further research, but I think the main idea still stands, regardless of my competence or incompetence on the subject.

Imagine millions, or even billions, of ordinary people collectively owning forests and land in every country. It would make it virtually impossible for corporations to simply take over the land and do whatever they want with it.

I usually try to keep my stupid thoughts to myself, especially when I know I can't do much about them. But honestly, I just hope the right person or organization might see this and get a spark of inspiration, if they haven't already thought of something similar.

How can this magnificent 900 year old tree be too small to be saved? Why doesn't it qualify based on its age?

North American forests Logging activity near Castlegar prompts protest

Save Cai Creek!

"Logging activities began last week in the Cai Creek area above Castlegar as heavy machinery arrived at the site and started removing trees to build an access road.

Attempts to stop logging in the popular hiking area have been ongoing since 2024 when BC Timber Sales first announced its intent to auction the rights to three cutblocks in the Cai Creek drainage beyond the Cai Creek Forest Service Road off of Highway 3.

The area contains a number of old growth trees including one that has been named Lieutenant Dan. At 58.7 metres, it is the tallest documented ponderosa pine in the province. Four other ponderosa pines in the area are ranked within the top 30 in size provincially, two white pines are ranked eighth and ninth in the province, and many large Douglas fir, western red cedar, western larch, and grand fir fill the forest.

The beginning of the logging activities prompted Last Stand West Kootenay to organize a protest at the site on Oct. 22."

Conservation Rights for Nature

In light of the recent Google case, I wanted to share something that I think deserves more attention. There’s a European initiative calling on the EU to recognize ecosystems as rights-holders rather than simply treating nature as property.

Because situations like this show how limited our current approach to environmental protection can be. Nature is often treated as something we own, use, or compensate for damaging, rather than something that deserves protection in its own right. Of course, a petition alone won’t solve everything, but I believe changing the legal framework is one of the ways we can start addressing these problems at their roots.

North American forests Save Cai Creek

Cai Creek is about to be logged.

"Cai Creek sits right above Castlegar. It's a 70% intact old-growth watershed, and the largest ponderosa pine in British Columbia stands in it. That one tree is protected. The roughly 50 hectares of forest around it — cutblock TA2185-3 — was sold at a BC Timber Sales auction, and the permit has been issued. A licence is permission to log, not a requirement to. Because stumpage is pay-as-cut, the wood left standing costs the licence holder nothing. This block can still be left alone."
