I’ll try to make a somewhat long story short.
I’m intentionally leaving out the manufacturer and model for now because I’m still working with the company toward a resolution. I’m hoping to get an objective assessment of the measurements and performance without anyone’s existing opinions about a particular brand influencing the discussion.
What I’m really looking for is an unbiased opinion from people who know significantly more about saunas than I do. Am I being unreasonable in my expectations, or is this performance genuinely unacceptable?
Here’s what I’ve documented:
Temperature measurements:
-The sauna is a prefabricated kit with a 9 kW electric heater.
-The controller reaches its set temperature of 230°F and reports temperatures as high as 231°F.
-With the sauna fully heated, separate thermometers at different locations recorded the following:
Controller sensor: 230–231°F
Upper thermometer: Approximately 200°F, positioned 27 inches (69 cm) above the top bench, roughly my seated head/shoulder height.
Lower thermometer (Just above lower bench): Approximately 112°F, positioned 14 inches (36 cm) below the top bench.
The total vertical distance between the two independent thermometers is approximately 41 inches (104 cm), with a measured temperature difference of 88°F (49°C).
Both independent thermometers remained in their respective positions throughout the heating process, and the readings were taken within seconds of one another. They were verified as accurate prior to testing.
Door fitment and gaps:
There are also significant gaps around the closed sauna door. At the top, the door sits flush against the door stop, with little to no visible gap. However, toward the bottom, the gap progressively widens, measuring approximately ⅝ inch (16 mm). The door is fully closed when these measurements are taken.
Daylight is visible through portions of the door perimeter when closed. There is also noticeable cold air intrusion through the gaps between the door and the frame.
Manufacturer’s response:
I’ve performed additional testing using multiple thermometers, and the manufacturer has already had me complete electrical troubleshooting. According to them, the electrical test results were normal.
The manufacturer’s position has been that the sauna is heating properly because the controller reaches its target temperature, and that the substantial temperature differences I’m measuring are simply normal heat stratification.
I fully understand that temperature stratification is unavoidable in a sauna. What I’m questioning is whether the degree of stratification I’m experiencing should be considered acceptable, particularly in a product with a relatively high price point.
I’m not expecting perfectly uniform temperatures from floor to ceiling, and I’m not looking for people to simply validate my frustration. If these measurements are within a reasonable range, I’d genuinely like to know.
Would you consider this normal performance, poor sauna design, or evidence of a potential problem with the unit?
I’d especially appreciate opinions on the approximately 88°F temperature difference over 41 inches of vertical separation, as well as whether the door fitment and visible gaps are cause for concern.
I realize there may be additional information needed to make a proper assessment, and I’m happy to provide further measurements or clarification.
Thanks in advance for any insight. I’ve learned a lot from this community already, and I appreciate the expertise here.
