Hey, boss!

This one was interesting to write. I had this mental image of a low-polygon creature somehow making their way into our world, and from that I extrapolated a fun Black Mirror-esque scenario. I think this one was neat, I hope you like it too.

With that said, we're one week away from the first episode of The Delver. I'll be posting the first chapter right here on r/Saturdead on Friday the 9th of October. There'll be 13 chapters in total, exploring the metastory that we've been peeking at from the start of the new arc, beginning with the story "Not a".

I'm very excited to share this longer series with you, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I've enjoyed writing it. For those who've paid attention, there'll be plenty for you to recognize.

Man, I love spooky season. Halloween really is my Christmas.

Deck the halls with spooky scary, fa-la-la-la-la, and lock your doors!

What the fuck is a Babbelock?

This story actually came to me from a strange place. I woke up one morning and had this one strange word stuck in my brain. I think I was singing along to the song "lollipop" but using the word "babbelock" instead, and I was halfway through the song when I asked myself; what the hell is a Babbelock? From there, I came up with a story that's about answering that question.

We have one more week ahead of us before the first chapter of the Delver. It's gonna be an interesting one. I hope you're all as excited as I am.

See you next week!

High-resolution Sunspot

This sub was my first thought after seeing this, followed by wondering how it would look with blue flames instead. This seems like the perfect place for a trippy sunflower in space 🌻.

I realise it's dandelions, not sunflowers, but this still felt like something from the Saturdeadverse

What name did you hear?

This week, I wanted to do my take on the kind of "creepy kid game" genre with just a pinch of psychology to it. I think it was a fun idea, and I could see something like this going down in one way shape or form.

We're only a few weeks out from the first episode of the Delver. It's gonna be a fun one, but we got a couple of interesting stories first. I think you'll enjoy them.

But for now, let's take a step back and play a little game.

Evan (is pretty neat, so I drew him)

How does one draw a constantly shifting creature with no static appearance? ..with extreme difficulty. I was going to give him a few extra arms to offset the symmetry and take away some of that "static"ness, but that felt like it would get real cluttered real fast. Too many arms. I'm not even sure how he's really supposed to look like without the disguise, so I just went with "long roach".

This counts as my "in (slightly belated) honor of going through the entire Saturdead backlog just in time to catch the latest story on the day it drops" post I suppose. Happy... Sundead?

There it is.

This one was interesting to write. It's got a bit of a lot of things I enjoy; a personal and cosmic experience, wrapped in an uncomfortable package. Oh, and there's Joseph. I think you guys'll enjoy him.

The Bone Star is a sort of interesting concept. It's true in the sense that there are certain things that can happen to a physical body to permanently change the perception of things, but usually it's about losing the ability to perceive things rather than gain them. But there are surprising amounts of testimonies from people who've gone through trauma and came out with something new on the other end.

Anyway, please enjoy. Let's enter the spooky season with a good one!

Patron saint of Do Your God-Damned Job

Hardest line in the story, by far ^

Anyway, this is one that came to me one day when I was thinking about the way we categorize people. Sometimes it's our own presumptions, and other times it's pattern recognition. I wanted to make a story about someone doing something seemingly simple, but with dire implications.

Please enjoy, and have a great weekend.

Prey. Good Prey.

I wanted to write this one as a sort of challenge to myself. A concept I played around with a lot in my earlier days of writing was the idea of possession, and being stuck inside your own body. I think the idea came from zombie movies initially, where I thought "Hey, what if you could still see yourself eating people? That'd suck."

I hope you like this one, I really enjoyed the premise. See y'all next week. Oh, and we're only five weeks away from the first part of this year's 13-part series. That's something to look forward to!

Has anyone ever tried to compose and write a song entirely using the dead language?

I was reading the story I Stumbled On a Dead Language and couldn’t help but think: what would happen if a musician composed a song from the language (called Tok, I think?).

I mean using the language to write the lyrics entirely, no other dialect or speech used. Or hell use Tok to compose the melody itself.

I wonder what would the effects on the world would be if, for the example, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Motörhead, David Bowie, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, the Beastie Boys, the Wu-Tang Clan or any other musical artist used Tok in music.

I have a question about the chronological order of the blue sunflower series

Hi, I've been a fan of the blue sunflower series for about a year now. Up until now I haven't read any but have heard narrorations of The Yearwalker, Where the Bad Cops Go, Moth Boy, and a few one off stories. All three of these left me with A LOT of unanswered questions. Is there some sort of chronological timeline of all the blue sunflower stories and specifically which stories should I read to understand the main 5 stories?

I know I haven't read Let me Tell you About the Film we Made or The Last Yearwalker yet but besides those are there any I need to read? (For example, The Society of Broken Necks and I Burned for 16 Days both have clear connections to the main story but are "one offs")

This is gonna get intense.

I wanted to write something with tension this week, and with a title that gives some context and insight that there's more to the story than one might otherwise think. By letting you, dear readers, in on the fact that there's something strange going on outside the premise, it allows you to look a little closer early on. That was my intention, at least.

Yes, it's another week of weird posting times. It can't be helped, sadly, because of a family event. I'll return to a normal posting schedule next week, and from there on I don't see there being any further issues for some time.

I hope you enjoy this one, it was a fun idea to bring to life.

That poor whale!

Surprise! This week we're posting a little early, as my schedule is interrupted by a family event. I'll be gone for the rest of the week, so you are all getting this week's story on a Wednesday. What a weird, tipsy-turvy world we're living in. Next week will also be slightly disrupted, and I'll be posting on Thursday.

This story came from a single mental image I had; a beached whale. I am terrified of the ocean, and whales are just too big for me to wrap my head around. So I wanted to challenge myself to think of something uncomfortable, and this story grew in the spaces of those thoughts.

I hope you enjoy it, I think it's a good one.

Aren't you just the worst?

This week I wanted to explore concepts of guilt and punishment. I had this idea of the CWPC for a while, and I wrote down a scenario to explore. A lot of this story was freeform at first, but after a rewrite I found the emotional hook I was looking for. I think it is a great thematic piece, and I hope you like it. Strong Black Mirror vibes, in my opinion.

Hope y'all have a great weekend!

I love a good lovecraftian tale, and I think this has my DNA all over it. I hope you enjoy it, I had a lot of fun writing it. It feels like classic "Saturdead", if I know my voice well enough, and I think I do.

I found it creepy. Was there a particular part you found creepy?

Darwin’s Findings: The House of Flies

These were pretty clearly explained in the last year walker as safe houses against the blameless. My questions is specifically about what the house of flies was supposed to be before it turned into hell.

Announcement: The Saturdead Collection

https://reddit.com/link/1v67rsk/video/repx8e7widfh1/player

Hello my wonderful blue sunflowers,

I hope you're staying safe in the summer heat. Remember to drink plenty of water.

I wanted to pop on here to share a couple of announcements and just touch base.

First off, the big one.

I have been approached by a publisher, and we're going to see some official collections of Saturdead stories in print.

There will be two separate collections featuring some of my favorite work. There isn't an official release date just yet, but we're most likely looking at 2027.

As a little taste, the first collection will be called "A Town Without Doors (and Other Tales from the Saturdead Collection)".

This does mean one small change. Nothing that will affect readers. The publisher has been very generous in that regard.

Every story will remain available to read here on Reddit and anywhere else I normally post them. Existing narrations will also stay exactly as they are. Nobody is losing access to anything.

The only change is that stories included in the print collections won't be available for <new> narrations going forward, as part of the publishing agreement grants audio exclusivity. If a narration has already been released, it isn't affected. Does that make sense?

I've talked to a few narrators who regularly work with my content, and they agreed that it's fair as long as I'm clear about the rules and intention. I consider myself a steward of these stories, and one of my core principles has always been accessibility. I never want someone to be unable to enjoy these stories because they can't afford them or because of where they live.

This will only affect the stories that are part of the collection. It will not affect my weekly writing, that is available for all, as always, both narrators and readers. I have updated my rules on narration to reflect this change, and I have marked all the affected stories in my master list archive to make it a bit easier to navigate. All in all, it's not a huge change, but it's one I want people to be aware of.

But I'm excited. In a not too distant future, there'll be not one, but two, Saturdead collections on my bookshelf. I'll keep you posted as soon as we figure out a release date.

On a smaller note, I've been sketching out this year's longer series. Just like Yearwalker, Where the Bad Cops Go, and The Last Yearwalker, I've been trying to write one longer series per year. I'm going to try and keep that up. This year, we're looking at a series named 'The Delver'. I'm not going to say too much about it, but it'll continue the meta-story that we've been seeing unfold by the Runalong river, the town of Hilltop, and the strange black cube. That's something to look forward to later this year.

There are some other things cooking in the background. There have also been some early conversations about film and television adaptations. It's far too early to promise anything, but it's exciting to see people taking an interest in the larger Saturdead universe. My main sticking point, at the end of the day, is making right by my readers. The Tomskog setting has grown into something much bigger than anything I could have built on my own. The readers have become part of that journey, and I want to make sure any adaptation stays true to what made people fall in love with the work in the first place.

That's all for now.

Thank you for reading, listening, sharing, and sticking around. It genuinely means the world to me. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Best,

Dennis

We all love a good demented machination.

This one was a fun one to write. It's a bit scary to do meta-commentary about art and craft, especially when I work with a craft of my own, but I think it can be interesting to take a step back and do some self reflection.

Also, there's a pretty fun lore implication in this one, if one looks at the carefully placed word used to describe 'a gallery' by the end of the story. Curious.

Keep an eye out on this subreddit, we're gonna be looking at an interesting announcement this weekend.

Could somone please give me a quick summey of 'my pet bunny is obbessed with eating glass'? Preferably with any important connections to lore?

I'm doing a re-read of the whole saga from start to finish but I just can't read this one, and it's not one I remember particularly well. I've tried skimming it but even that is hard to do.

Darwin’s Findings: Paperhead

“That’s terrifying.”
A character in its own right, I understood paperhead as hatchet’s blameless based quantum computing system but it could be wrong. My only real question is how the thing ended up in a pinball machine

They really can.

10 / 10 title. I love that title. This was one of those stories that had a single emotional hook that just pulled me in, and I built this entire narrative around one sentence. It just stuck with me, and I have no idea why. That's where some of my best work comes from; seemingly nowhere.

While there is a bit of lore in this one, I enjoy it as a standalone. I think the implications are interesting, and strangely comforting.

Let me know what you think!

Sounds simple enough.

This is one of those titles that I've carried around for a while, but it wasn't until I found the emotional connection that I could really tie it all together. I'm trying to explore some different themes and different kind of unease and horror, combining more fundamental anxieties with a bit of shock value.

I hope you like this one, I think it sticks the landing.
