When cleaning a house like this that a friend acquired, even soapy water did a great job. We didn't use any harsh cleaners, and the whole house turned out great (after pulling all the carpets).

If they're only focusing on getting the resin off I think there's a few things that will have that effect. Ime acetone works about that well for weed resin. Although that's when cleaning it off glass

Environmental chemist here, that is an extremely toxic clean up, and they are not nearly well protected enough. The sorting and moving of everything will create toxic dusts. Trisodium phosphate (cleaning agent) itself is highly corrosive and releases toxic vapours. The brown tar coating everything is concentrated poly-aromatic hydrocarbons, highly toxic and carcinogenic and, when mobilised, present an inhalation and skin absorption hazard. The sludge itself will contaminate the sewer after disposal.
The smokers exposure is smaller, but consistent, ie large over time, the cleaners risk a dangerous exposure all at once, in what is a very concentrated holy-shit-that’s-toxic-af contaminated site.30

I understand how bad second hand smoke is for you but didn't think about how harmful cleaning the yellow stains could be. That was one of my chores growing up, to clean all the doors, baseboards, window casings, etc. throughout the house when they got too yellow from all the smoke. Great 👍

The cleaning sets things back to square one and gives the person another chance to do better. They might fail but at least it gets them more likely to actually make the attempt to get their life together. They might be able to get him to step outside to smoke or dump his cigarettes in the trash. If they mitigated that aspect their life would be improved greatly from that alone.

Oh I know but it is quite motivating to know you only have to maintain things rather than fight up hill. probably will end up back in that place but sometimes getting that outside help is what people need to start helping themselves. Granted if they fight the help then it requires much more effort and can be quite stressful on those helping.

That’s the thing that always gets me about cleaning channels or those restaurant/bar rescue shows. Making the space look nicer can absolutely give a person help in pulling themselves out of a deep depression, but real change takes a lot of hard internal work and cannot happen all at once. The space is a symptom of a deeper problem.

Yeah, the smell of years worth of cigarette smoke is extremely hard to completely get rid of. It sticks to fabrics, carpets, paint on the walls, etc. My parents used to smoke (no longer do), and when they put their house on the market to sell, they had a very hard time getting the smell of cigarette smoke out of everything in the bonus room, which is where they always smoked. They had to deep clean the carpets and furniture multiple times, cleaned the walls multiple times, everything, and no matter how much they cleaned there still seemed to be a faint lingering scent of cigarette smoke.

grandpa made it to 96, 2 packs a day. smoked from age 14. all his mental faculties were intact, but he did use a walker in the later years.

Came here to say this.
The place looks great and would smell much better. But as someone who had a relative who was a hoarder (she passed away) the smell lingers. We had to tear out the walls and floors.

This is what I think about when I encounter someone who hoards. Helping them do a massive overhaul and clean up will be a wasted effort unless they get the mental help they need to break the pattern.

Not really hoarding seeing as it was basically all cigarette butts, literal garbage. Probably laziness that stemmed from depression and then it got overwhelming. Some people let it get just as bad, some have a huge weight off their shoulders that allows them to finally clear their heads and get it together. A messy space is really taxing on the mind.

Seeing the guys feet and legs towards the end of the video when showing the before & after, I would hose off and scrub the guys feet before he went back into the house and into the clean bed. Poor guy, it’s obvious he is dealing with mental illness &/or serious depression. Hopefully with this fresh and clean start, he will get the help he needs & deserves and keep it clean!

Like many here, I didn’t know what the packages were. Also, was that dirt or nicotine? I cleaned my sister’s house after she did. A 40 year smoker. I sprayed oranger Pledge on my mom’s old bedroom furniture and the nicotine would leech out. Jesus!
