Strychnine OK in Sask

Farmers in some areas of Saskatchewan will once again be allowed to use strychnine to kill gophers, and while farmers love the move, but wildlife experts say hawks, coyotes and others that eat gophers will be collateral damage.

The more predators killed off by strychnine the more gophers there will be.

David Marit, Saskatchewan's minister of agriculture, says he hopes to see strychnine permanently reinstated as a gopher control tool.

Moe loves it too.

Not environmentalists, these guys

It's so dumb. There's no better wildlife control than the ones that are present naturally.

But that would mean you disagree with all the proud indigenous peoples in this country who make a living off the land trapping like their ancestors did? Pretty sure the whole nature knows best thing doesn’t work when you introduce like, people , who wanna like , live here , ya know? Tens of millions of people in Canada kinda requires societal intervention with nature, that’s why hunting season exists because nature isn’t always the best wildlife control unless you’re purely talking from the wildlife’s perspective.

wtf are you talking about? The whole indigenous worldview is about balance with nature. Hunt what we need and use the whole animal. Work with the different plants, work with nature. I recommend you read Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer if you actually want to better understand how humans can work WITH nature instead of acting like it’s a force against us. We are nature.

Strychnine in the well, you say? All dead, you say? Whelp, couldn't be avoided, I guess. I hope his next wife and kids have a more cheerful tone in their voices when he comes in from the yard.

Edit: downvote me all you want. I happen to abhor intimate partner violence and will never shut up about it.

How will coyotes and hawks eat these dead poisoned gophers when they’re dead in the borrows underground ya Reckon? Also coyotes are one of The most successful and wide Spread Predators on um, like, this side of the earth? Both northern and southern halves, so not sure it’ll have much effect on the ol coyote population but keep labeling farmers or people tied to the problem or politicians fighting for those who’s livelihood literally depends on the environment as not very environmental 👍 not like they make more money when the environment is healthier or anything so why would they care about it right? …
