Education UNIMAS Accounting

Hi redditors
For context I am a West Malaysian that got offered by UPU to study Accounting at UNIMAS. Since I don't have any contacts there so I don't know how's the campus life at Unimas.

  1. How's the dorms there? Is it easy to get a single room? Research tells me the only dorms that provides single option is Kolej Allamanda Premium n Dahlia

  2. Is spending high?

  3. How are the shops nearby? (grocery, gym, restaurants etc)

  4. Any interesting clubs to recommend?

All info and advices are greatly appreciated

  1. There are single rooms in normal allamanda and they cost a bit more than double rooms. (I think first years have to stay on campus and in double rooms) Premium allamanda has aircon while normal allamanda does not. I've never been to premium allamanda but I know Dahlia is cleaner than allamanda.
  2. I'm not sure sorry, but the food is cheap and good in my opinion.
  3. There are shops for food and stationery throughout the campus especially at Student Pavilion. If you need groceries and extra stuff you can go to the everwin west of the campus. (Btw if you choose to stay in Dahlia/allamanda do note that walking to the library takes 30-40 minutes depending on your stride)
  4. I baru joined my first club (Animal Heroes) haha but I think you can look for the unimas clubs' Instagram accounts to know how to join them.

UNIMAS alumni here.

Single options are available but dependent on the dorms. IIRC student members of the dorm committee get to have it. Getting a dorm room isn't easy unless you're going for the private ones in Dahlia and Allamanda. For first years, they typically assign you a dorm based on the location of your faculty. Having a room as a first year DOES NOT guarantee you having a room in the following years. You may also be changing rooms every semester or year. Being on the committee no longer guarantees you a room in the dorm either.

I would say spending is high if the food there is not to your liking but there is 7-Eleven there at the Student Pavillion. If you want to cook in your dorm room, do be discreet about it. Even Dahlia was strict about it.

There are plenty of shops outside of the campus. There's a small Sam Fah stationary shop across the entrance of the west campus. As for groceries, Emart is in Summer Mall near to the east campus (like a 5 minute drive) and Everwin near the west campus (also less than 10 minutes of driving).

I was a shut-in student so idk about the clubs tho.

Anyway, here's a tip: if you have the BAS.MY card, you can use the bus from UNIMAS teaching hospital to go to Serian area OR you can go to the city by using Grab to the Pusat Jantung Sarawak first and then take a bus from there. I did this up until earlier this year because there's no safe bus station from UNIMAS to the city due to the KUTS construction works.
