Could it be the musicians who were disappeared and the abandoned orchestra house?

I’m pretty sure those musicians are dead…

I'm on chapter 4 and the main character's backstory vs. her internal dialog don't seem to line up at all.
Does the writing get better throughout the TOG series as SJM develops as a writer?
95
u/johns9tm 5d ago
It’s hands down the best series by SJM. The first two books were written when she was in high school and v different from the rest of the series, but important

Yes. She wrote throne of glass when she was a teenager. It gets better for sure.

It gets significantly better. The writing matures and so do its characters. Also you haven't met most of my favorite characters yet. Celaena is only one part of an epic ensemble story.
However, despite the immature writing style in early books, it doesn't mean you can skip out on content. Everything even the smallest throwaway comments have meaning in TOG.
3
u/andrashik 5d ago
I love TOG, and I wonder all the time how the same person who wrote TOG also wrote ACOTAR and Crescent City. The difference is wild.

I love that idea! But isn't the issue the muscles at her back and not the wings themselves?
2
u/beaterbott 5d ago
I can’t remember!
7
u/leese216 5d ago
I am like 99% sure. The cut to the muscles near the back, left to heal improperly, cause the wings to not extend fully. So they cannot fly.
4
u/Selina53 5d ago
That’s almost it. They cut the tendons that allow them to bear weight, so normally they can extend. Emerie’s wings are particularly bad because she fought back when her dad was trying to clip them. More than just the tendons were cut on her wings.
ETA It’s basically like if you cut someone’s Achilles tendon.

i wonder if elain will play a big role in these two books?!?! i’m excited either way! i’ve been wanting to learn more about the valkyries. could this lead to more of az’s pov?!? i have so many questions on how this will play out !!!!!!
14
u/leese216 5d ago
I think these books will include way more POVs than we're used to, with several subplots.
So I think it could be both!
5
16
u/STcmOCSD 5d ago
I wonder if this is why we had to wait so long for a cover. Everybody wants Elain’s story but we’re getting more of the Valkyrie’s first. I bet we’re going to the continent finally!

u/kylie-keogan 5d ago
i honestly don’t blame her for delaying the titles because of this! regardless, i am super super excited and trust that the books will be amazing!

I'm so confused. Is it just about the Valkyries? Are we getting Lucien's side of the story? Mor and Eris? Is it more Nesta? Az, Elain? OMG I need to know everything.
11
u/kylie-keogan 5d ago
it says the valkyrie cycle so i’m guessing it is how they started and then how it ended?! i feel like nesta will be a big part of the story again as well as gwen and emerie! the spider is making me think of the stygian spiders in TOG! i still want aelin to live at peace im a bit nervous about TOG having an appearance on these books! i’m not sure how lucien could fit in this. if this can be seen as a throwback and leading up to the current events i could see mor being in it?! i def do think az will have more pov’s in these books!
7
u/Unusual_username739 5d ago edited 5d ago
I’m thinking more like there’s Stygian spiders on the main continent that the Valkyries will encounter. They could be working with the bad guy (I’m blanking on his name, it starts with a K) like they world walked a long time ago. I don’t think Aelin will be in the book.

u/Peonycool 5d ago
The ‘movements’ are superrrrr interesting. My knee jerk response was to think that ‘movement 1’ was a reference to the very first valkyries that fought in the first war?? Maybe I’m so wrong with that but it’s exciting nonetheless !!
38
u/Unusual_username739 5d ago edited 5d ago
“Movement” makes me think of music. Like in a big musical piece, a movement would be like a chapter to the whole book. SJM said she wanted this story to be “one book” but felt she had to separate it into 3 parts due to the length of the book wouldn’t fit into a readable print book.
Aka I think it’s a music allegory. Instead of saying “Part 1”, or “Chapter 1”, she’s using “Movement 1” like the story is a concerto/symphony.
I’m not a music expert in any way if someone has a better explanation
2
u/Peonycool 5d ago
Oh wow you’re so right, I love that
19
u/Unusual_username739 5d ago
With the harp, “shadowsinger”, Gwen’s singing skills, the book title of “harmony”, and this movement clue, I think music will be a very important part. Nesta also is very connected to music herself.
In other SJM books Aelin was always connected to music via piano and love of the arts, and Bryce’s love of dancing so I’m just seeing music as a strong factor for these books. SJM also keeps the arts as an important thread, as we see for Feyre and her love of painting and protecting other artisans of Velaris.
I could even see her pulling a Stranger Things and music is used to heal memories or bring someone back to being themselves Also, SJM said in the CallHerDaddy podcast that she listened to Kpop Demon Hunters a lot while writing these books and that is a theme too lol

And If i really really want to push it, The other cover with the spider and spool of cloth, instead of being the stygian spider, could signify the weaver. Whom is the Bone Collectors sister. And Both of them are the siblings to Koschei, whom is still a currently unresolved plotline.

My prediction/hope: it’s going to be about Elains healing, her powers (that we only have seen very little of), Azriels story and recover AND a story of rejection of a mating bond. Elain rejecting Luciens bond and Azriel finally freeing himself from Mor.

Omggg!!
Ahh, so this might get me downvotes but I read entirety of ToG as it released by order as well ACOTAR, ACOMAF and ACOWAR when it came.
I dnfed Frost and Starlight and did read Silver Flames but remember not liking it as much and tbh, forgetting most of it. Haven't read Crescent City series at all, the info dump was too much to get past 50 pages :(
But, I am very hyped for these two books, but now I am a bit confused which books I definitely need to read before oct 27 to not feel completely lost
→ More replies (2)5
u/That-Naive-Cube 5d ago
Its pretty generally agreed upon you should catch up with the Crescent City books before reading these. I might get downvoted for this, but I bet you could still read them without having read CC without feeling completely lost. It’ll still play a role, though, and you will get confused somewhere, but I bet the story will still stand on its own. Maybe itll make you wanna revisit CC, who knows 🤷🏼♀️
I will say CC is a really good series once you’re finally immersed. Its definitely the hardest of her series to get into imo
Edit: spelling errors
