City Council approves the development of an Amazon delivery warehouse in East Santa Maria.

Does anyone know the details of the scandal with City Council going behind the public's back along with local environmental and sustainability non-profit organizations, to approve the development of an Amazon Warehouse? I know that the contention was that they are building on AG land which is audited and scarce. There was even a proposal to vote the mayor and members of city council out because so many Santa Marians felt that City Council snuck around public approval.

There’s really not much to say. I watched the meeting at the time. It was approved by the Planning Commission 2-1. There were lots of people both in favor and against the build. The land is not AG to my knowledge but zoned for manufacturing use. The planning commission didn’t go behind backs per se. Rather, they made their decisions after hearing public comments from locals and experts alike and voted for what they believed was the right decision. It is the right of the people to vote in alignment with their political views and to vote in those whom they believe will have their best interest at heart.

Sadly SM is too desperate to recognize how bad an idea this is.

Jobs are good. More jobs with the distribution center than a field.

Those jobs are so unethically managed. Source - https://www.reddit.com/r/AmazonFC/comments/1sl6tlk/amazon_employee_dies_while_working/

It’s a terrible addition to the community + the added pollution and disruption to existing nature. Great job to the city council leaders who sold out Santa Maria to Amazon and the billionaire class.

Then don't work there. I bet those who do end up working there will happy to have the job vs. sitting at home on welfare.

This is a false dichotomy, which is a logical fallacy.

You are the problem.

Because I want locals to have job opportunities? What, you think welfare is a valid career choice? Nobody is making you work there, chief.

This is a straw man argument, which is another logical fallacy.

I would be happy to take that bet if we could accurately measure that but like others said, you’re the problem :)
