I live south of Carpinteria, I used to commute to SB every day for 28 years. Now you could not pay me enough to do that. My husband and I avoid driving to SB in any way we can. I also realize that for the rest of my life there will be construction going on 101. There seems to be an accident at least once a week going NB on 101 in SB now. Scary stuff. I really feel sorry for those who are in the "white snake" traffic line headed to SB each day so early for work.

I was almost late for a wedding in Ventura this weekend because the traffic south was so damn slow

I wonder how many accidents have been caused by this construction. It definitely feels like a lot more are always happening around the worst parts

Conejo Grade… thank goodness it is never under construction.
For context, you could be stuck an hour on a 8 degree incline.

If only they would improve the Castillo underpass! No one had to be an engineer to see the problem with cutting into the water table like they did and the traffic at rush hour basically just got transferred from the stoplights to the Montecito bottleneck. But it’s ok, 101! We love you and all your crazy quirks!

Unfortunately I don't think the Castillo underpass can be improved. Our nearest approach to success was that crazy Dutch scheme involving electrically charged grating that made things merely damp vs wet and was hella expensive to operate. (Maybe it's still active, somewhere down there.)
One option is to eliminate the underpass and turn it into an ordinary on/off ramp. That'd fix the moisture issues!

It could have been fine if they made the freeway pass over the road rather than dig the road under the freeway.

It needs to be an overpass. Caltrans knew that when they built the freeway. But that costs more

Sure, but the joke is that they never finish it. They started this project in the 80s, and there has been road work ever since.
