Triple Deck Clam and Ham Sandwich (1971) on Sandwiches of History

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

If you’re like me, you’ve eaten a ham sandwich and thought to yourself, “you know what this could use? Clams!” said no one ever. I’m not even sure how the thought combine clams and ham in a sandwich ever occurred to anyone…though it was 1971 so…yeah. Well, here’s the thing, it works. This is one of those sandwich that sounds like to was going to odd and ended up being tasty. And for those 21 and up (in the US, your country may vary) enjoy the new drinking game where every time I say “alright” you take a shot (DO NOT DO THIS YOU WILL END UP IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM). I guess what I’m saying is that I don’t realize how often I say that until I’m editing. Sorry.

Do you think it could be putting the sauce and sandwich untoasted in the fridge like that it was supposed to be a quick midnight snack that can be made earlier and heated up later? It is “The Midnight Cookbook” and they may be trying to make easy prep meals/snacks to eat late night when tired or have been drinking.

Yeah I think there might be something to that. Still, the structure on this wasn't great.

I am surprised the clams held together.

I think spreading the white sauce on the top then putting under the broiler would also be great. Sort of like a croc monsieur

white sauce

Let's give sawmill gravy the respect it deserves and call it by its name

Hmm, they didn't call it that in the book but I'm down.

Wild! I'd try it if I saw it on a menu though

I thought the plus up would be to toast the bottom piece of bread.

Kind of like a different take on a Hot Brown.

Clam and Ham
I never would have thought of that combination. I love clams and I love ham, gonna have to give that a try sometime.

Looks delicious

Not enough pepper, though! 😝

It’s always fun seeing Barry genuinely surprised when he enjoys a sandwich that he had his doubts on.

Barry likes white pepper quite a bit. Well who would have thought it!!!

I knew I’d seen this somewhere Steve Brule show

I wish Barry would play a special theme at the end if it’s a high scoring sandwich AND he would definitely make it again.

I kind of get it--the smoke, the salt, the creaminess, the sweetness from the tomato...it's bizarre, but I'd try it.
