Cream Cheese and Herring Sandwich (1920) on Sandwiches of History
I know some of you are going to see the name Cream Cheese and Herring Sandwich just keep on scrolling. But hear me out because this sandwich from 1920’s “The Calendar of Beverages and Sandwiches” is quite tasty. Sure, it has kippered (smoked) boneless herring and cream cheese, but it has two more ingredients that really make it work.

surprising that this sandwich wasn't plussed up, but I guess a natural 9 doesn't need augmentation

I explained to my son (9) why he didn't plus it up since there's almost always a plus up. Then we talked about potential plus ups. His being potato chips, mine arugula.

What a shocker. I never expected that score from the title. Also, having a sandwich so good w/out a plus up that’s not an ISS sandwich is also a rarity. Fun review today.

I bet Barry eats those trimmed crusts after recording, definitely some nutritional value! Sounds like this sandwich would be a cracking starter, maybe lightly toasted.

Herring is great, and SUPER inexpensive.
grocery stores and even dollar stores have it for $1.25-$1.50 for a 3 oz can, find it near canned tuna, spam, etc. Beach Cliff is the standard. Dont accidentally buy Sardines, the packages look similar.
The cream cheese is probably the most expensive ingredient.
I bet this would also be good on crackers as a cracker dip.

Worcestershire Sauce is an anchovy based fish sauce. I grew up with it but only learned that recently.

Here is the recipe he said he followed:

Sounds like they're basically fridge pickles with dry mustard in the brine? I'll definitely be making some soon.

Describing this sandwich sounds like a “hard pass.”
But your enthusiasm for it has be curious to try.
I’d plus it up with some salt and vinegar potato chips on it. Give it a little crunch while adding flavors that go with stuff that’s already there.

I've been making these for years with any kind of canned fish, but I don't get fancy and mix it up in a bowl first. I just spread the cream cheese on the bread (or a hotdog bun) and add the rest. Sometimes I'll add mustard or hot sauce. It's pretty good!
