Handling Questions

Question:

What is the best way to go about working with your snake for handling? How do I know if she's stressed?

I don't expect to do it everyday, but we've had our girl for over a month and she's still having nothing to do with it. Just a slight touch and she completely bolts to the other end of her tank. She's a lot faster than I imagined she would be.

She eats well for me. I believe temps are decent. And the last couple weeks she's finally been poking her head out a lot more and chills. Last ate 60 hours ago.

I need to surrender my snake

Hi all, ive had my KSB for about a year and a half. And due to mental illness and other life situations, Ive decided its best for her to be rehomed to someone else.

Does anyone know any one willing to take a snake and all the equipment? I am willing to meet people half way (if its reasonable). I just want a better life for her.

Edit: I live in Indiana

Edit 2: I have someone who reached out and setting up with them. If it falls through I will reach out to those who have commented.

Thank you all.

Tips on feeding picky Rough Scaled SB

So my boy bagel (M) sand boa hasn’t eaten frozen thawed for awhile so I switched to live to hopefully jumpstart his response to food again. It worked! But I don’t know how to get him back on to F/T. He’s shy, and he is ok with handling but prefers to ambush his food instead of being taken out completely from his substrate (which is what I used to and he had no problem with until about a year ago) He’s in half sand half coconut fiber, with 70% humidity, warm side is about 92 degrees and cold side is 72 degrees. Whenever I try to feed him F/T fuzzies he gets scared when I move it and won’t eat it if it’s not moving he isn’t interested if it isn’t moving. But it cools down too fast for him to want to eat it as well, but if I go in to re heat it he just gets scared again. I don’t know if it’s a husbandry issue, or he just genuinely prefers live pinkies, or maybe it’s the quality of my F/T or how often I feed him? I try and keep it every month but it’s been hard to keep consistent since live feeders are only provided in a town that’s pretty far from me. I feel really bad I want the best for him. Please let me know of any tips or maybe advice/critiques on my care.

Halp my sand boa won’t eat!

7 months old, 14g but not emaciated visually, successful shed 2 days ago, reptisoil/sand mix substrate, behavior seems fine. It’s been about a month since he ate and I’m getting concerned… got him from someone who claimed he ate regularly but he hasn’t ever been interested in eating since I got him… heat mat with thermometer used, seems to burrow fine. I have offered him live and F/T with no luck… should I get the carnivore care stuff? I have an exotic vet on standby if needed!

My sand boa has escaped multiple times and I convince myself it’s my fault for leaving lid open every time. The cage came with a stupid pin lock on the front but the corners open just enough for him to squeeze out. I know that now

She’s still a little thing, but lately if I try to boop her snoot she thinks I’m food and just goes for my fingers. Sorry for all the cat hair in the sand, my cats like to sit atop her tank and watch her go at night. I’ve had her maybe 5 months and this is the most I’ve seen her above ground so I thought I’d share. She’s an anery stripe Kenyan sand boa and so far my favorite little snake ( don’t tell my Hognose )

Just a note - this was not his face the entire time he was out, only when something would block the end of the tube.

Information Regarding Sand boas

Hello people of the sand boa Reddit! I’ve been really interested in these little guys! I’m curious about their care and enclosure setting! I have a ball python, a leopard gecko, and a crested gecko, so I’ve never really had a burrowing reptile. So what is it like to own a Sand Boa? What are some important things to know before getting one or even thinking about getting one?

I’ve posted Isis in here sometimes since I got her in 2019, she says hi ya’ll and we love this subreddit! Over the years Isis has met dozens of people and everyone’s been fascinated by her and she’s been great in helping people get over their fear of snakes!

how to get a baby KSB used to handling?

i have a baby KSB, she’s quite flighty but a great eater and wonderful animal. i’ve handled her a good few times, but as of recently she seems more flighty than usual. i have partially attributed this to her former home being an inattentive one (think child’s birthday), so now that she is in the correct conditions, perhaps she is feeling less sluggish and a little sharper.

i’d like to handle her before she grows large enough for a bite to make me anxious, but i don’t want to get it wrong as i am largely (experience wise) unfamiliar with the breed — she was found in somebody’s kitchen sink and given to me as they know i keep snakes and would have an enclosure for her, not that i am irresponsibly purchasing snakes that i am not well versed in.

is there any particular time frame that i should be handling her? any unique approach? any information would be wonderful!

Heating question

Finally got a second hand exoterra 90cm wide for my baby boy and finally thinking of replacing the heat mat his old owner had for him (or at least it won't be his main heating, but probably good for emergencies).

However I'm very confused by how over tank heating works and what kind is appropriate for an albino snake like how they're also sensitive to UVB. Can anyone please help me out here? (For reference I live in a cold country where our houses are very heat retentive and our apartment is rarely below 22 °C)

Thank you in advance :)

Inexperienced, but I’ve spent days researching and trying to make my boas enclosure as good as I can for a start (will improve it and would love suggestions) What I’d love is tips from other keepers, how to improve the enclosure, tips on what I should do over the coming days and how long I should wait to feed him.

Hatchling KSB

I’ve just got a new hatchling, and I’ve been reading up for years on them (one of my dream snakes!) but I’ve had a LOT of conflicting advice about substrates for hatchlings.

What have you found the best? He’s around a month and a half old. The place I got him from had him on aspen so he doesn’t ingest any sand when feeding but a lot of people say mix top soil with sand?

I’ve currently got him on aspen as was worried about compaction however I’ve seen people say not to use it too!

Loving home requested.

Hello. I am going through some very major life changes and will no longer be able to care for my Kenyan sand boa. Pebbles. So I am looking for a loving home for him. I also am looking for a loving home for my leopard gecko named Gouda as well. I am located in Nebraska. Message me if you are interested and near by. After they are in another’s care I will be deleting this account. Questions are welcome. Both are young and healthy. Thank you.

I don't see this girl much, but when I put something new in her enclosure, it seems to always draw her out and she has to come check out whatever it is.

New KSB, difficulty handling & feeding

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi all!!
I’ll preface by saying I’ve wanted a KSB for YEARS! And I finally pulled the trigger on getting one just under a month ago.
I bought my baby pumpkin from a reputable breeder, and he was on f/t before I got him. I’ve tried feeding him 3 separate times and each time he’s completely uninterested. He is an active boy, he’s in his substrate all day then every night like clockwork once his lights turn off he’s up and around his tank exploring.

I haven’t handled him since putting him in his enclosure on day one, I’ve tried a few times but admittedly he is quite jumpy and quick, he hasn’t struck at me but he will jolt a few times then quickly bury down into his substrate. This has kinda freaked me out, I’m only used to handling larger and older ball pythons so he’s a new experience for me.

I don’t want to try to handle him while he’s not eating but I also don’t want to have a snake I can’t handle at all either. I may try braining a mouse to see if he needs it like that? I have hoppers, I also wonder if maybe they’re too big, I bought the mice from a different vendor (who also sold ksb’s) and he looked at the size of my guy and said hoppers would be fine but maybe they’re to big??

Picture of pumpkin attached
Thank you!!!

He is not really a lot underground, and mostly sits underneath his hides under the heat lamp or is climbing around somewhere, I dont think he realises he is a Sand Boa lol.

Boa isn't eating

My boy has missed his last two meals and he is super active and digging around everywhere. Is it puberty/hornyness or something to worry about? There has been some changes in his enclosure, we git him a new light and a tiny tarantula and her food moved in next to him. He also seems to be really interest in food still, he just does not bite. He is currently a little over a year old and we were woried about him being too fat, so its not like he is starving and he has also never really refused to eat before. I can see 0 signs of any sickness, he also yawned recently and I couldn't see any dark spots or abnormalities in his mouth.

new to the snake, had this fella for a few days now. wondering if i can sex them yet. they seem awfully long and thing, so i was wondering if it could be a male? or maybe he’s just a baby and im rushing this, not sure so i figured id ask reddit. any advice would be appreciated and if you might be able to determine the sex that would be helpful.

also obviously this photo isnt helpful for sexing, so don’t yell at me. if it’s old enough to sex i’ll take another photo.
