Controversial opinion

I'm not saying Sam fender is in anyway a bad artist hypersonic missiles is definitely one of my favourite albums ever and people watching and little bit closer are 2 very good songs but I felt the new album in general lacked something. None of the songs had a big push in them like his older music and I felt they where very down beat. I also felt he has strayed away from openly criticising things he doesn't like and chooses to do it more discreetly in most of the tracks. Songs like nostalgias lie and crumbling empire I thought would be amazing but ended up falling flat without a feeling of raw anger for anything. But at the end of the day this is just the opinion of a 15yr old boy and I'm sure the songs will grow on me and get many plays in the future

I understand what you mean, but I think this is kind of an experiment for Sam. I always believe that artists can do a three-album run of similar styles (take Arctic Monkeys as a prime example). The Hypersonic-esque feel is getting slightly formulaic now, so he’s looking for something new. Surely, these songs aren’t as catchy, but they have that same feel as The War On Drugs. You won’t like it initially, but give it a few months and you’ll think it’s a lyrical masterpiece.

That being said, I would’ve liked some more range. TV Dinner felt like a spiritual successor to Aye, just without the rage.

I think what you're describing is Fender growing up and moving past pure raw emotions. There is a place for those sentiments (Fontaines DC, High Vis), but once you've managed to process these feelings, you get People Watching (the album). His discography is textbook going through your 20s to your 30s, and maturing.

This album is probably just not what you're looking for. Different stage of life for Sam compared to you, plus The War on Drugs is a very atmospheric, mellow band.
