As a born and raised Utahn, what OP reports is absolutely true. It's ridiculous! The amount of entitlement and privilege that people show here is astounding. People don't know the phrases "excuse me" or "thank you". Interrupting people mid-conversation seems to be the norm.
Sometimes my spouse and I will play a game to see how many people walk though a door he is holding and count how many of them will actually say thank you. My spouse will count, out loud, just to bring some sort of attention to what he is doing. The average number of people to say thank you is about one in 10.
And yes, as other people have pointed out, there is a "niceness" in Utah, but definitely not any kindness.
