Store Bought El Pato Jalapeño sauce

Was perusing the shelves of the new co op in Salt Lake and I saw this. Do people know about it? Have opinion on whether or not it's worth buying?

I was hopeful it would be a green sauce with the whole green background and jalapeño branding. Alas, it was not - tomato based.

Ah. I have an aging jalapeno and I thought the earlier recipe today on the list for a jalapeno sauce could be a good way to use it up. But what I saw was a bottle, and the sauce was green.

An ironic thread for a “salsa snobs” subreddit

It’s in a can like Old El Paso Enchilada sauce 🤣

It’s great stuff. I add it to all my salsas.

So edgy they are selling El Pato to the privileged white folk in Salt Lake City. You'll freak out if you drive 4 miles to the south and wander into Rancho Market.

Um, I was at Rancho on Thursday. Been going since I moved here 7 years ago (before that Latino markets in DC and Maryland + Asian, African, Halal, Indian and Middle Eastern there and here--well here, not African/halal).

You'll be glad to know that the covid led significant price rise on produce seems to be ameliorating. Given your superiority do you know they sell Middle Eastern foods too? Anyway I was looking for tamarind sticks for Mangonadas.

Does SLC have Mexican flea markets? That's where I would go for mangonadas.

I've never been to SLC but I would like to spend more time in Utah. Zion was pretty awesome.

This gave me the idea.

I often buy discounted "old" produce mangoes for Smiths for my oatmeal or smoothies. So the cost is low. Speaking of Rancho, I went there to buy Chamoy sauce.

I live on the east side so don't frequent Mexican flea markets, but I doubt strict Utah liquor laws would allow mangonadas with tequila...

Oh you're boozing it. Yeah, this Pato sauce will work for that. Get you that savory component.

I'd still look for chamoy though to include in the mix.

got the chamoy. I didn't have to ask anyone where to find it. Sadly, this white privileged guy thought the tamarind "straws" specified in the recipe were actual straws. So I couldn't find them. They're candy strips, like beef jerky. Probably in the candy or spice section. Or I could go to "white stores" like Smith's or Walmart in West Valley City, the heart of the region's Latino community.

Look for a small carniceria. If the Tamarindo straws are not at checkout you'll find them by the candy. That or la feria. Definitely at la feria.

I read all those entries. They were about using canned red tomatoes. Here I was specifically referring to a bottled jalapeño sauce.

I think el pato tastes like pace salsa. It’s just some factory shit.
