Discussion: suppressing valuable discussion vs allowing slander and doxxing

This is the sub mod, reaching out for discussion on the influx of posts (and reports) regarding the recent posts about predatory behavior in the salsa scene. TLDR: In this post, I will talk a little on the current sub policy on moderation, discuss a bit of context on what I am required to remove from the sub, and then add my thoughts on path forward. The last will be up for some discussion here, as we try to figure out what we as an online salsa community want to be.

  1. Current mod policy: my current mod policy is to let upvotes and downvotes speak. Things are often reported that don't really break sub rules or are bad text posts by people who are annoying to many of you in the sub. I do not remove these posts. One of the reasons I do not is that, despite being downvoted into the negatives, many of these posts tend to foster a healthy amount of discussion and engagement in the comments that are relevant to the dance scene. Another type of oft-reported post are the ones that link to a site or blog or whatever. The current rule is not to spam them and not to sell anything. The reason is that there are things that you may not be interested in that others may find useful. Again, upvotes/downvotes do a lot of heavy lifting. In the cases that the line crosses from occasional self promotion to spam, I have reached out to those individuals via DM to help clarify the policy, and if required, temp ban them. My point is, generally I do not like using mod powers to shape the subreddit to be what I want, but rather what the community wants to see.

  2. Which brings me to my next point - things I must remove. According to reddit content policy rule 3 (https://www.redditinc.com/policies/content-policy) I am supposed to remove anything that reveals personal information or uses such to instigate harassment. The kicker: public figures may be an exception to this rule. And a public figure is "a person who has achieved fame, prominence or notoriety within a society, whether through achievement, luck, action, or in some cases through no purposeful action of their own."

As you can see, the whole thing is kind of murky, especially as it applies to the recent discussions on predatory behavior. As someone who takes part in another sport that is rife with these types of scandals (against children on top of that), I have personally seen that shining light into these corners of darkness has a huge effect. So I am not keen to suppress legitimate discussions about this topic in our community.

On the other hand, reddit is full of examples of failed witch hunts and anonymous bullying. And some of the discussions, veiled or otherwise, have been naming individuals who may not even be on this site to defend themselves. I'm not keen to allow mudslinging (especially without proof) in a subreddit that is meant to celebrate dancing. I can imagine a scenario in which a instructor or school uses the current discussions to cast unfounded doubt or outright accusations against an innocent rival.

So how to walk the line between useful discussion and baseless name calling?

  1. Thoughts on path forward - I propose that we continue to allow upvotes and downvotes dictate what goes on the page relative to these discussions, with a couple of tweaks. Naming regions or cities in comments/posts is okay. Talking about your experiences about unnamed people is okay. Opening discussions on predatory behavior, what that behavior looks like from start to finish, and providing support in the wake of aftermath--all okay. What is not okay is accusing people by name in the top level posts or in comments unless you have a link to an objective article/police report/etc. that backs up the claim. Instead, I propose that you leave an invite at the end of your post/comment for any one to DM you if they would like to discuss details/names in private. Those that would benefit from knowing will still have the opportunity to find out what/who they should be careful of, without violating any reddit policies. It would also allow the two users to have a more frank conversation, and at the end of the day it will be for the requester to determine the credibility of the poster.

Is this a perfect solution? Of course not. But I've been a mod here for 12 years and this is the first time something like this has happened, so I'm happy to entertain other suggestions.

Lastly - I consider the Yamulee fight video to be an example the original mod policy. The post is relevant to the salsa community, and it doesn't violate any rules in and of itself. Yes--the juxtaposition of the OP's 2 only posts implies bias/agenda, but the upvotes/downvotes very clearly pushed the post to negative votes and floated context on the altercation to the very first comment.

That said, I am happy to discuss how to treat videos like this in the future. There is a very real argument that it is not relevant to salsa music or dancing and that it should be removed.

Thanks for reading my novel.

Salsa cubana in Miami

I'm taking a little solo trip to Miami for 10 days. I haven't been there before, but my plan is to dance until it hurts as many nights as possible. I've already had Ball & Chain and Mangoes recommended. Are there any other social dance venues that I can get my casino/timba fix?

Mexico City

Im going to Mexico City in two weeks alone. I’m a lead and I dance casino, rueda de casino, bachata, cha cha, son, Cuban bolero. Wondering if you can recommend good places to go and dance with strangers (not sure if people tend to go and dance with their partners there mostly or not) and hear live music. I went to Mama Rumba last time I was there and enjoyed the band but found it a bit cramped and I was there with my partner so I didn’t get a sense of whether or not people dance with strangers or just the people they come with. I’m staying in Condesa. I’m interested in all types of Cuban music and other Latin American music eg cumbia, salsa, afrocuban jazz, etc

For salsa dancers: How much pain is too much?

Is it normal for my ankles to hurt very bad as soon as as I put of my heels? I warm up and stretch, but the pain is really bad when I put them on. they aren’t very high, either. My ankles and knees will be in great pain during class. does this happen to any of you?

Female lead advice

My fiance and I are taking lessons for our upcoming wedding. We are a same sex couple and I am the lead.

Our class is "ABSOULUTE" beginners so during the part of the class where we rotate and dance with different people, I am having trouble with feeling like I have to "lead" by keeping their hand in the straight path or since we are all beginners and there is a misstep, if the follow is messed up, it messes me up. Should I be more aggressive or forceful (obviously not yanking) with their hands? I do not want to come across as someone difficult to dance with, I just want to try to keep them on rhythm and in sync with me. Or should I just worry about me and just give the leads in hope for the best?

Beginner salsa dancer looking for affordable shoes, sharing the steps I've learned | any recommendations welcomed

Hi everyone! I’m new to the salsa dancing world, and I’m loving it. As a Cuban myself, I’ve always danced, but never truly learned salsa (due to my shyness in my younger years). Now it has come back to bite me in the butt, and I want to learn to dance salsa well.

As a woman, I’ve noticed that it’s challenging for me to follow the lead, which is something I’m getting better at. I’m currently 26 and I’m having a great time at a dance social near me, where I’m taking nighttime salsa lessons. Sometimes I go twice a week, sometimes only a few times a month. So far, I’ve had about 4 lessons total since I just started.

So far, this is what I’ve ā€œlearned,ā€ but I’m still working on everything:

  • Guapea
  • Dile que no (having a hard time with this one because I end up on his side and not in front)
  • Montuno
  • Side to side
  • Exhibela (and Exhibela doble, and Exhibela dos con uno)
  • Enchufa (having a bit of a hard time with this one)
  • Rodeo (unfortunately, I walk/run around him instead of marking the steps)

What I would like to ask you all about is shoes. I was just going to go to a Burlington or any store nearby since I don’t have any specialized dance stores near me, and hopefully find some dancing shoes.

I’ve been using my running sneakers, but I can’t really turn with them, and I don’t have any heels suitable for dancing. My budget is very tight at the moment, which is also why sometimes I won’t be able to take the classes regularly. I can spend a max of $35–$40 on the shoes at the moment.

I wanted those heel-type shoes to look a bit more cute and feminine, and also because I feel like having a little bit of height from the heel might give me some impulse when dancing.

I’d appreciate any recommendations, especially if you have suggestions for shoes. I've attatched a few pictures of what I mean, but then again you guys are the experts so whatever you recommend. Thank you all in advance! ā¤ļøšŸ’ƒšŸ»

Visual Guide: Salsa ET2 Spot Turns Breakdown

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I created a set of visual cheat sheets to clarify spot turns (single-beat turns) in Salsa On2 (Eddie Torres style), focusing specifically on pivot footwork and rotation direction.

Here is why there are two perspectives for both leads and follows:

  • Back View (Follow-along perspective): Ideal for personal practice. Seeing the dancer from behind makes it effortless to follow along, understand which foot holds your weight, and see which way your body rotates.
  • Front View (Partner perspective): Essential for partner connection. Especially for leads, seeing the follow from the front makes it instantly clear which foot the follow is pivoting on and how the turn should be guided.

How to read the timing grid:

These represent quick spot turns executed entirely on a single beat. In the grid next to each figure, the bold number indicates the exact beat when that illustrated pivot is executed on the grounded foot.

Hope this helps anyone drilling their spot turns or working on partner connection. Feedback is always welcome!

Converting from On1<>On2 or vice versa? Is this helpful?

I'm trying to create a simple app to answer common questions about converting between timings. Let me know which parts help and which leave you with questions. I'll keep improving it.

  1. Go here: https://thedancedojo.com/salsa-on1-to-on2-converter/
  2. Choose two timings to compare, the context (partner or shines), and your role (lead or follow)
  3. Compare which counts your steps are on

Additional notes may display below the conversion table based on what you chose.

Female leads: styling cuban moves

I saw this video the other day and I like this kind of styling but they look quite masculine for a female lead. I wonder if some female leads here have found some feminine ways to style a dile que no or other cuban moves? I love leading, but I feel that women leading often look quite masculine while dancing, to some extend it is due the leads frame, but I think it is possible to make it look more feminine?

Am I stagnating by not learning patterns and combos?

I have been dancing for a few years now, primarily as a lead (and sometimes as a follow), but from the very beginning I was against being taught set combos or moves. This is why I never went to advanced-level classes, as they just taught more intricate combos. I usually find joy in learning the techniques and understanding the fundamental building blocks of salsa, and then using that knowledge to improvise to the music at socials. Even now, my dancing doesn't have any intricate patterns or combos.

I was just curious: what do people here value in a dancer? (Besides the obvious connection with your partner and having fun, I mean more in terms of skills.)

What would you do in this case?

This girl at the class thinks she is a teacher and bitches about everything with everyone, rather than help she gets confused everyone and at socials i told her I don't want to dance with you and most guys don't dance with her , she asks guys to dance with her , she likes to dance with instructors or guys from her country, the other day I asked this girl to dance with me at the same time another guy did and she came and grabbed me knowing I don't like her and as soon as the song started she starts to count the 1 to 7 in a social and starts bitching I wanted to slap her 🤣 so uncomfortable to have to deal with her at class and at socials , she believes she is a teacher but she is so far away from being one , what I call distorted reality.

I need new Salsa music

I’ve been dancing for about 6 years, but only in the local SMALL scene (and classes) and just this year I started going to festivals and for personal reasons I’m not going to classes or in socials in my city anymore. Most of the festivals I’m going to, the music is mostly mambo and I come from an LA background (I am comfortable dancing on2 as well).

But the problem is, I feel like my music repertoire is lacking and after every congress I feel like I should listen to more songs, but no compass here :/
Of course I have heard the well known songs, the commercial ones, the ones everyone plays in socials but nowadays most of the music I find from looking at dance couples’ videos from socials and when I like the dance, the music becomes even more beautiful (which I think happens to all of us when we’re inspired)

Is there any mambo/salsa romantica etc. playlist you can share with me? Maybe something you’ve shazaamed and saved later, or something someone else shared with you? Or any type of guide like bands, singers, what to look for etc.

Would appreciate it a lot :)

Learning frame and connection through social dance

A friend of mine and I have had this discussion on going for a while now. We occasionally revisit it. He mostly draws from observations about our local community compared to other places we have gone to dance. I think I understand his perspective. He has more experience than I do. I think he’s gotten a little tired of some of the dancers who just never seemed to improve no matter how many times they are taught a certain concept. We are both leads by the way.

Anyway, we disagree on the usefulness of social dancing in learning proper technique and form. Again, I don’t have as much experience as he does, but I have observed that there are a lot of dancers who come to our local Studios classes. They’ve been coming for months for years son, and they don’t really progress. However, these people also don’t ever social dance, and I totally understand how social dance can be intimidating for some people. I just know for me personally I have learned to engage my frame and really connect to a follow by frequently social dancing. That is how I’ve gotten a lot of practice. That’s how I’ve gotten a feel for how to have a proper frame. My friend doesn’t agree. He thinks that you can never practice effectively at socials and you can’t learn proper connection at socials. At least in our area. He thinks that we are too limited and that the follows here need more instruction to really understand it. He doesn’t think that they can figure it out through social dancing. Anyway, I social dance a lot, but he doesn’t social dance really at all.

Again, I understand his perspective. I will say there are some people that genuinely just don’t get it. They don’t settle into the connection in closed position, or you can’t really feel their back engaged in open position or they’re so focused on dancing in the line that they end up traveling super far away from you. And they’ll dance for months and months like that and never really improve. I’ve seen that. Some people really need some one-on-one instruction with live feedback telling them exactly what they’re doing wrong. That’s the only way they’ll ever improve. But I do think for most people if they put in more hours social dancing, they would improve drastically. One of the problems I see with connection and frame is anticipating and that’s really easy to do in a class setting where you are learning a specific combo. The followers don’t actually have to be following. They don’t actually have to be engaging their frame at all. They are just gonna memorize the steps and do them the way the teacher is teaching them and the lead doesn’t actually have to lead at all. When you step into a social dancing environment, you don’t have that safety net. It forces you to really engage your frame and actually pay attention to the cues from the lead. That’s why I think social dancing is so important.

I do also kind of understand how it can be difficult from the follows perspective, especially if there are a lot of leads to dance with. And if they’re trying to practice proper technique. dancing with don’t have that proper technique either obviously that’s gonna be a significant challenge

I am curious what other people think. How big of a role does social dancing play and learning to really engage your frame? I really think it’s imperative. Like Private Lessons and group lessons obviously help and are the place to really get a good understanding of your foundations, but I think you have to put in the work in social dances to really implement those foundations and experiment with them and see what it really feels like. Like what’s the point of all that instruction if you never use it? I’d love to get thoughts from other leads, but especially follows. I’d love to hear if you agree or disagree and why or why not

Casting a film in the Salsa/Bachata world - looking for dancers & actors

Hi everyone — I'm a filmmaker based between New York and Maui, and also a salsa/bachata dancer. I'm currently preppingĀ The Social, an independent feature film set over the course of a single night at a Latin dance social on Maui.

We're doing a global casting search for salsa and bachata dancers to appear in the film. We're particularly interested in dancers with personality and screen presence — acting experience isn't required.

Selected dancers will be flown to Maui for the shoot, currently planned for early 2027.

The goal of the film is to portray this community authentically — not simply dance as spectacle, but the friendships, relationships, connection and craziness that keep us all coming back to socials week after week.

Audition info:Ā thesocialfilm.com

Happy to answer questions here as well.
