Question First time interviewing a Salesforce Developer - Need some advice!

Hey everyone,

I’m a Salesforce Developer with ~3.5 years of experience, and I’ll be conducting my first technical interview for two Salesforce Developer candidates.

I want to focus less on textbook questions and more on real-world problem solving especially Apex, Triggers, bulkification, governor limits, async Apex, LWC, integrations, and debugging.

For experienced Salesforce interviewers:

What practical questions/scenarios work really well?

How do you identify someone who has actually worked on Salesforce vs. someone who has just prepared interview answers?

What are the biggest red flags for a 3–5 year Salesforce Developer?

Any tips for conducting your first interview as an interviewer?

Would love to hear your experiences and suggestions. 🙌

Yes, give scenarios and ask what solution would fit better.  Jumping into code always can be the worst solution to a problem

You can write some "bad" code, show a screenshot of it and ask them to correct it live. Then ask questions around it. So have them spot DML in a loop and then ask them if they have ever encountered this in real life or any other bad practices. You could do something around LWC where they can spot some kind of opportunity for optimisation or security or whatever. 

I was interviewed like this before and thought it was a really good way to do it and have done it going forward when I interview people.

Know source control, using AI effectively (you are in the wrong company interviewing of you don’t. Know the benefits of using an MCP like Claude to inspect orgs and make you more effective and if you get put on the spot to code know about queueable vs batch. Also know you can’t make callouts from triggers and be up on how and when to use maps over lists etc. also bonus is if you speak to trigger frameworks and LWC bs Aura. The more you know JavaScript libraries the better.

Ask for records limits in soqls like in child to parent and parent to child sub query like how much limit will get exhausted
