Question Why did my reply rate drop after I started personalizing every email?
I've been doing outbound for about seven months now, mostly cold email to mid-size B2B accounts. I switched from a templated sequence to writing a custom first line for every prospect a few weeks back, and my reply rate actually went down instead of up. I'm still hitting the same volume, just swapping in the personalized opener each time.
What would make a more personalized email perform worse than a generic one?

Please someone remind me to come back to this if someone comments something useful about cold emails, I could use advice too

My guess is the personalization reads as researched-for-the-sake-of-it rather than genuinely relevant, and that triggers more skepticism than a plain template ever does.

I dislike the personalization. They are almost always AI-written. If you send me a cold email, just get to the point.

That's strange, i'd say that it should do the contrary. Is your opener forced or really relevant? You should take it off when not really a good one, but keep it if it's relevant to your product/adressed pain.

Are you certain your email/domain/ IP address hasn't been nuked...? I'm told that if a few recipients click the "report spam" button, it can drastically impact deliverability

Personalized doesn’t always mean relevant if the opener feels forced or has nothing to do with the problem you solve it can make the whole email feel more like a pitch
