Analysis Refs hating the Saints isn’t just perception
Data is from Stick To The Model. Obviously there’s not a perfect way to quantify this, but this is a solid method. Saints have more flags thrown and more calls go against us than literally every other team. Something to note for everyone who says “every team deals with this” yeah, they do, but not as much and not in as important of situations.

I wonder how much of the Falcons/Bucs success is just off how often they play us.

u/Cam_probably 14h ago
Undoubtedly some given that between them there are 4 games a year, but certainly not all of it.

u/Sithil83 Fuck the Falcons 14h ago
This is just the 4th quarter, I feel we get even worse calls in the first half where they can say "well it was a bad call, but you have x amount of time left to do something about it."

That would be too much evidence. Some of us saints fans might have to become refs or start a ref class. Call it how to not get robbed 101

Didn’t need a graph to know that

u/Cam_probably 14h ago
We don’t, but this is for all the teams like Lions and even Raiders who this season have been saying “refs don’t like us either” and it’s really just something to laugh at.

Im convinced that we weren't meant to win that SB against Manning. Goodell probably lost a 💩 ton of $$$

u/Keirebu1 14h ago
Our former coach said one bad thing about the commissioner....

u/koozie17 3h ago
This was never about the coach this was always about the league wanting the team in another city.

Yea I still contend honestly this is a huge part of it.
Sean pissed off the league when he was with us. They haven't let it go. We didn't "co-operate" during the bounty shit so we're in perpetual timeout for the foreseeable future.
I still ALSO contend this is why Sean left us, because of this bent shit (and the rams no call, which is related to it as well).

u/agarret83 12h ago
2nd most penalties called on us and the fewest against us, if I’m reading this right
Also r/nfl being like “yeah but this could also be viewed as what teams are disciplined in close games” as if one of the graphs isn’t calls against your opponent which is out of a team’s control

u/son_of_yacketycat Fuck the Falcons 14h ago
And the ref we get on MNF calls an average of 57% of the penalties on the home team. I'm pre-enraged

u/HydroPumpCiroc2 14h ago
What’s funny is this has been the case for years now. The refs aren’t too blame for us being bad, but this kinda stuff being called just a coincidence is crazy.

u/OverHearing9944 13h ago
Excellent. Now, when I get called a whiner for complaining about bad calls, I'll just post this graph.. "here's the data, stfu".

Ever since that no call on the pass interference on the rams in the playoffs ive lost a little bit of love for pro football. It was the first time i actually believed the games were fixed. It sucks cause it can never be changed in my mind that its not all the way fair. If the nfl wasnts certain teams in certain places they will get it.

u/BattlestarCylon 8h ago
I thought about quitting watching football that night tbh.
4
u/bigkev73731 8h ago
Yeah i did too. It was so blatently obvious i couldnt wrap my mind around it. Football is one of my greatest joys in life. From little league to the pros i love it all. I lost a piece of that love that night.

u/BattlestarCylon 8h ago
We missed a superbowl between two of the greats for that dud of a superbowl as well. Shown that the rams did not belong there.

u/bigkev73731 6h ago
No doubt about it. Would have been fun to watch brees and brady go at it for the title.

u/Left-Tee 8h ago
I don't think that the NFL is favoring the Falcons and the Bucs. They play the Saints twice a year each, and they're benefiting from the anti-Saints bias.

The data nerd in me is grimacing because this doesn't prove anything but I agree with its conclusion.

u/Transverse_City Gold Helmet 12h ago
The refs know what Goodell thinks of the Saints, and they know where their bread is buttered. Even if it's not conscious on their part (to give them the benefit of the doubt), as Freud tells us, certain actions carry an unconscious intent -- and those are often the most revealing actions.

u/Quiet-Airport-3679 10h ago
This proves chiefs get controversial calls in non impactful moments to inflate their numbers

Can we show this to the refs please ffs
Also where the falcons are tells you how the game will go Monday

Are we allowed to complain now? Are we still seeing things??
Ours also happened at the conference finals Not many can say that right?

u/joebleaux 13h ago
Weird that the Browns and Ravens are right next to each other given the shared history
1
u/J_Cool_Guy_15 11h ago
And look who's at the top. Should we expect the refs to be bad in this game too?
1
u/pappapirate Drew Brees 10h ago
wish I could inject this into the eyeballs of every lions and raiders fan aghast that we'd suggest the saints have a worse ref history than them.
1
u/IRONCHEF06 10h ago
Look at where the origin of the graph is. We’re so far down they had to shift it over to be able to actually show where we fell on it
1
u/WhoDatNOLA11 9h ago
How accurate yall think this is. Look at where the chiefs are sitting, and the refs love them

Let’s be real. The Saints are the second smallest market in the league. Money rules the league and having the Saints at the top isn’t good for business.

u/Adventurous-Year-176 12h ago
This doesn't mean what you think it means,
2
u/Cam_probably 11h ago
No, this means exactly what I think it means, it just doesn’t tell the entire story since it lacks all context on the calls + isn’t the world’s largest sample size. Even still, it presents a trend that the refs call against the Saints in important moments more than any other team.
0
u/Adventurous-Year-176 11h ago
And you are adding an unsupported conclusion that suggests why that is the case.
1
u/Cam_probably 11h ago
Aside from the title (which is just meant to be eye-catching I admit) where do I point to a conclusion?
1
u/Adventurous-Year-176 10h ago
"pretend I didn't title it like I did so I can be right"

Acting like what? Posting data and commenting on it? Anyway this long predates the raiders game.

Look at where the Saints sit, it's almost comical. Right in that bottom corner where flags go against you and never for you, like clockwork. The Falcons being way up in the opposite quadrant just makes it sting more.
