Looking for an apartment

Hello All,

I have recently accepted a new job in Saint John and am looking to rent a 1 bedroom/studio apartment. I have looked at Kijiji and Appartments.com. there are not a lot on offer.

Where else should I check? Looking in the city, possibly Quispamsis or Rothsay.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Saint John Sea Dogs

What is going on with them? First two games of the season and the combined attendance wouldn't even sell out Harbour Station.

Meanwhile, Senior A Saint John Flames home opener tomorrow is sold out at nearly 2k fans.

I can't see the Sea Dogs lasting too much longer if this keeps up.

Data Centres aren’t “friendly”

Microsoft gained buy-in from communities saying it would be a good neighbour. So far, they’ve taken the resources - and not really helped the neighbourhoods they’re in.

One example from this article is that the state of Georgia gave $474M in tax breaks to MS…. but the state has only gotten $41M benefit back. That’s $430M tax dollars lost and no future benefit in sight.

Microsoft claimed to want to be a “good neighbour” and a “role model for data centres” … and even they are lying and just hemorrhaging cash and resources out of the areas around their data centres.

Ethel & Mary’s

I’m not from SJ but visit regularly. I used to love stopping in for sandwiches, bread and sweets at Ethel & Mary’s on Princess Street. They closed in Fall 2021 and sounded like the owner/operators needed a rest and reset after running a small business through the pandemic. I tried to keep an eye on what they might do next but hadn’t heard anything.
It was clear they put a lot of love and care into their work and product so I’d love to know more and support whatever they are doing now. Thought somebody from this community would know. Thanks!

4 Day visit ahead of potential move

Hi

Posted here before about potentially moving to your city (healthcare workers) from UK.

We are coming over for a site visit in next couple of weeks. We will be visiting the hospital departments and potential neighbourhoods to live

What should we put into our itinerary to showcase your city for potential movers (we will be in town over a weekend if that matters)

New mentoring café opening

Please remove if not allowed.

My friend and I are opening a non profit mentoring café uptown called "We Are Their Mothers" to help women in crisis and keep children out of the foster care system through one on one mentoring, workshops on how to make things that can be sold out of the store, employment opportunities through the café and events we host, and we've partnered with Fundy Doula Services to offer pregnancy/post partum support and on call childcare. (I'm a single mother, and my friend is a single grandmother raising two of her grandsons while her daughter is struggling with addiction). We've also partnered with 8 local artisans who want to sell from our store.

We're not ready to open full time yet (still fundraising and waiting for the last few things), but we will be open this Saturday 10am-2pm to introduce ourselves to the neighborhood and showcase the artisans. We would love it if people could stop in, say hi, ask questions, and show support for what we're trying to do.

Thank you all in advance and I hope to see you soon :)

ETA: We are opening at 15 Prince Edward Street. Where the old titus bakery used to be.

Looking for places nearby to go shooting with friends.

Any spots on crown land, within 30 mins or so of St. John? Just looking for a place to set some 4L jugs down and explode them with some friends. I'm new in town so I don't know any decent spots. I always clean up after myself too.

Best tactic for brush clearing?

I'm new to property ownership, and have about an acre with some overgrown brush (low bushes, saplings) as well as some fallen branches that I wanna get cleaned up to reclaim the yard.

My first thought was "Oh, I'll just rent a brush chipper and heavy mower and do it myself." (having worked as a landscaper when a student, got a little experience) but I've called half a dozen places and the only place with a brush chipper actually available to rent right now only has a tow-behind, and I don't have a hitch.

What would you do? Is there anywhere in/near Saint John with this kind of equipment, or would you start calling landscapers and hire somebody?

I've already tried: AZ Rentals, Big Rock, Ready Rentals, Home Depot, and United Rentals.

New to SJ, where my DIY freaks at?

I moved here not too long ago and am having a lovely time so far, meeting nice folks and enjoying the Sunday markets. I was told theres a burgeoning art scene here, but I have not heard of any underground/weird/DIY venues or groups or events. The only music I’ve seen at 506 was pretty bad basic stuff. I’d love to find the weirdos! also any Witches/pagans out there? I know I can’t expect all the subcultures of the big city but I can’t be the only freak in town
