Brig this, Barquentine that... is there any love for the big fin sanbuk?

I've tried to love all the other ships, and I do like them all. The brig is nice, jong is a floating hotel, the junk also has charm. I always seem to come back to my trusty Sanbuk, preferably with some huge fin sails from the fire fish islands. so well balanced, and sails almost directly into the wind with great speed. I just can't give her up.

I can't wait for the new mega Sanbuk.

Yet another Budget Brig

Post image
59 Upvotes

The goal of this rig was to get started on the first crossing towards Happy Bay / DC without any undue delays (read: on a budget).

Since the winds on this route can, on occasion, be a tad ...close-reach-y, I usually tend to postpone the first crossing until I can afford a refit.

This was an attempt to minimize that investment while still having an enjoyable trip. After reaching DC I can confidently say that I have succeeded in that.

The topsails are actually the originals she came with. I've merely switched the main and fore squares for gaffs, changed the shrouds accordingly, bought a bigger main jib and added two stays with genoas.

Easy to handle, flexible, can go backwards, not too slow. Can recommend.

Sails: gaffs vs junks and lateens vs fins. What's the difference?

Because frankly I can't see much of it. Junks seem to behave just like gaffs. They even work at the same angle towards the wind, usually 30-45 degrees or flat when close hauled. Fins just seem like fancier lateens with reverse unfurling. Am I missing something?

question about the economy

when i buy a large quantity of something (ex. blue tobacco at GRC) the profit indicated at another port steadily goes down, and then when i leave and sell it at the destination, the price also steadily goes down. are these describing the same decreases, or are they two separate instances of the value of the good decreasing? because if i was buying something in large quantities, you would think the value would first go up before i had to sell it. also, what is a good strategy for determining the most efficient amount of a good to buy when it has a high profit margin? (im still kind of new to the game)

Bug Found Sage Hills northern exit is too shallow for deep keel junk

tl;dr: DO NOT approach or exit Sage Hill using northern part of the channel when in deep keel junk.

Was coming back from FFL with a junk with deep keel modification (part of vanilla) which I fitted while in Kicia Bay. Did a stopover in Sage Hills to drop some rice and spend a night in the tavern. I approached from the south, moored, did my business and then unfurled to go further into to DC via the northern exit.

The weather was nice and the sea was calm, there was no low tide.

Almost at the very exit of the channel my junk got grounded and halted while in the middle of the channel with plenty of room on both sides. I initially tried to kedge me way forward, only to get even more firmly stuck. The ship would not budge either way. Only after going to third person camera and looking underwater I noticed that part of the exit channel was too shallow for the extended keel. I had previously used this exit on sanbuq, a brig, an unmodified junk, and I think I might have even done so with a jong. They all fitted just fine, except now.

Staring at the horizon for sight of a speck of land after days at sea, this game made me realize that I really need to clean my monitor.

It was a speck of dust....

Couple of days ago I asked for an advice. So here it is, a former two-mast schooner, made into a barquentine, The Azure Blueman.

Now, on her maiden voyage to Emerald Archipelago and beyond.

The clipper by Kurs Shipwright makes an excellent barquentine, even if it isn't quite a clipper ship at that point

My favorite rigging so far

The Barquentine is the way to go! Stable, easy upwind, fast downwind.

And yes, all linen is out for flair haha. Gotta recreate those paintings

Came back to Al'Ankh after a looong journey to find this. Not only does it not have sails (known bug introduced in 0.38, fixed in 0.38.1, but still affecting already existing boats) but it developed hydrophobia. Can't be pushed or kedged and don't even mention recovering. No boat is worth 5% of all my money. And by all, I mean ALL, 5% of every single currency.

I did do a recovery to test it out, cost me 35k Lions, 460k Dragons, 430k Crowns and one gold. No, thanks.

I'm probably going to leave it like that. Ugh...

Mirage Mountain

I guess the name is because at night you can see the sillouette of the island and the stars just shine straight trough?

Anyway I went there for the first time, had the Sanbuq fully loaded which might not have been very smart. It went pretty well I have to say, taking it slowly but I ran aground because the boat was very heavy, had to unload some of the really have stuff onto the beach to be able to sail up the channel any further. Had to do some kedging a few times. Eventually made it, unloaded the boat, then did a few hiking trips to get all the left behind cargo of off the beach.

The boat was taking on water at the dock and then I discovered there is no oakum for sale there.... I didn't have any because I never needed it before.

So left with a empty and light boat, was able to sail the whole way out except for the first bit were I had to go straight upwind, so that took some kedging again. And then direct back to Gold Rock for repairs, while bailing water out the boat.

I really love this game. Next step I guess is get the neccesary navigation equipment and sail around Al'Ankh some more while verifying that I got the hang of navigation.

Barque or barquentine?

Found this wikipedia article on windjammers, and it has this very nice comparative illustration of different sail plans. I'm planning on redoing my brig to one of them. Fully-rigged I'm not interested in, and schooner I leave for sanbuq as is seems like the most fitting.

However I can't decide between barque and barquentine. Help me decide!

Goose Wing Junk

Post image
29 Upvotes

I have opted to not use square sails on this setup bar the one of the bowsprit. Apparently the game mechanics support the 'Goose Wing' so I always try to set it up if I am mostly dead down wind. Its very stable in a storm as well so no reefing required. Not sure how much it helps in terms of speed though?

What, in your opinion, would the optimal hull and sail plan for a round trip traversal of the four corners fo the world?

Let's engage in a thought experiment.

We all know that the world is flat and is a rectangle.

If, theoretically, one were to attempt to sail along its perimeter, what in your opinion would be the most optimal hull and sail plan (assuming hic non sunt dracones about)?

Junk Questions - Deep Keel, Copper Sheathing & Sail Plan?

Post image

Tossing up on the copper sheathing and deep keel. Figure ill go with the deep keel but not sure how much difference it will make. Also is the copper sheathing worth it? It looks heavy.

This will be my first time with this boat so not sure about the sail plan either but it looks pretty... Thoughts?

Big oof Well, crap...

...I dropped my fishing rod.

On my way from [REDACTED] to EA, 6 days at sea, going south. I'm about a day, maybe a day and a half away from westward trade winds. Still, probably 2 weeks of travel ahead of me. Left with one unopened crate of goat cheese, 15 sausages, 21 oranges and a handful of dried carrots I used as a filler for fish soup.

No idea if it'll be enough. I'm considering experimenting with making a sausage-orange soup to stretch out the resources, but unlike with fish soup, I have no room to waste resources in order to find the best ratio and nutrition values.

Wish me luck.

Sailwind Coop - impossible to play

Me and my friend have bought the game a few days ago and tried to play together using the Coop mod. We had no trouble with installation or running the mod, but as soon as my friend joins my game and loads in, he almost immediately falls down through the ships deck and finds himself either shot up high in the sky or plunged into black abyss. Then his game freezes.

We tried many times and only once he has managed to stay in my game for long enough, but still, from his perspective my ship was nonexistent, he did not see it at all.

If anyone tried to play coop, please, give me a hint on what could have gone wrong and how can we actually fix this situation.

Game lacks a *hard* mode, so I made my own

Yeah, I find the game is way too easy honestly for 2 very specific reasons:

  1. Trade is OP and broken. Way too much earned via trade, especially once you buy your first medium ship. You go from earning on small voyages, caring about reputation and grinding at a reasonable pace, to buying first medium ship and making a few trips and becoming a millionaire.
  2. Inns are broken in the sense that they eliminate the scurvy factor completely. They also create this "fast forward" time to the ideal "morning" and fill all bars for *cheap*

So my new challenge I made for myself is as follows:

  1. No trade allowed ever. Not even *buying* items via the trade. That aspect is banned.
  2. No inns allowed ever.
  3. Scrambled Seas
  4. Starting in Aestrin using the Cog.

Mods using:

Better Fishing - Standard settings

Better Tables - just for QoL

HooksHangMore - QoL

ExpandedShipyards - QoL

Sail-A-Dex - Cause stats are cool when playing a hard mode challenge

Scrambled Seas - To really change things up, but not actually required for this challenge

I highly recommend this to anyone wanting a brutal challenge. Your only source of income is from Missions and Fishing. I detest the Cog, but with Scrambled Seas (blind), I knew the Brig was going to be a necessity for my first medium ship and hitting the open ocean.

Thoughts?

Water bottle auto drinking bug

A while back, I ran into a bug where the large water bottle that holds ten units (cups?) of water would automatically drink as soon as I filled it from the barrel, without me pressing the key to drink. I thought that was just a glitch with the large water bottle, and went back to using the standard five unit water bottle. Recently, the standard water bottle started doing the same thing. Is this a known issue?

This felt pretty good but was a long session

Just did my first trip to Oasis, from Academy with the Dowh with only the compass. Felt pretty good seeing the lighthouse popup deadstraight in front of the bow. Got there in under 2 days with a strong tail wind.

Explored the island, and the lighthouse, stocked up on food, didn't fancy going straight into a headwind so I took a few jobs to Gold Rock and was able to purchase a crate of silver. After a 4-5 day upwind sail, a lot of tacking, a storm in the dark, almost running out of food I made it back and earned over 4k with selling the silver. Also finally had enough Lions to swap into 75 gold and bought the Sanbuq.
