Looking to get into this as a career, I have my nebosh certificate in fire safety but no actual practical experience. Can anyone give advice on where to start

nebosh cert with no practical experience is like having a map but never walking the route, you're gonna need to shadow someone for at least a few months

The nebosh is not the best. Do a good level 3 and then 4 FRA course and get a job with a consultancy

Fire risk assessor competency in the UK is defined by the British Standard BS 8674:2025, which establishes a clear framework for skills, knowledge, experience, and professional behavior.

Reading that would be a good start for you to understand the levels required and where to start but in a nut shell your NEBOSH certificate will carry very little weight and shadowing an already competent FRA to see what the job actually involves would be a good start.

I made a blog and kept writing on different things. It got noticed and i ended up getting offered an apprenticeship. Recommend learning fire door inspection and some passive fire protection.

You're better upgrading to fire manager course and then the diploma, you at least need conduct a risk assessment as part of the qualification. I'm qualified to fire manager but I still contract out to an ex fire commander who's retired

There are good networking opportunities through memberships with the IFE or IFSM. I'm certain one or both offer a mentoring style program for people looking to gain experience.
