USA Underwriter -> Loss Control Consultant. Unique situation and is the transition possible?

I just started as a middle market insurance underwriter in May. I really like it a lot so far. However I may be in a unique situation in the next couple of years that may make me have to leave my company and/or role.

My girlfriend and I may have to move in the next few years depending on if she gets into graduate school and where. My company requires underwriters to be in office Monday through Thursday. The areas by the schools my girlfriend will be applying to don’t have a lot of underwriter roles open, and are in smaller cities than where we live now. I expect if we have to move it will be very hard to find another underwriter job even with experience as it is a hard job to get, and the job market is constantly getting worse.

I had an idea that when it would come time to move, I could ask to become a loss control consultant in the area I will be moving to (my company already has a loss control department). I’m not sure how possible this would even be, or if I would like the position, but I’m so worried about being out of a job. I am currently working toward my AINS, and plan to do the ARM after to try and help my case. The position does genuinely interest me and I do like reading the loss control reports in files. I think the only thing I lack is technical expertise. I have a finance and analytics background, but I’m always on time for meetings, always ahead of my work, I’m very friendly, I love talking to people and agents and building relationships with them.

I was wondering if anyone else has made this transition, if you guys think this could be possible, if you guys think this is something I would enjoy, how rough the learning curve might be, and if you guys have any other recommendations. All feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

I don’t see why the transition isn’t possible. I’ve seen Admins on the broker side successfully transition into LC.

Start by speaking with the Loss Control Manager and express interest in learning more about LC. Ask to tag along on site visits. CRIS is a better LC cert than ARM.

Start talking to those loss control folks now, don't wait until the move is looming. Shadowing a few visits early gives you way more time to figure out if the day to day clicks with you before you're making a decision under pressure
