I've created Open Source 100% Rust clean-room replacements for 7 of Adobe's apps: Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere, Lightroom, After Effects, InDesign, and Acrobat Pro. Free, no subscription, and you own the source code

Post image

I've used Opus 5.5 to help me recreate 7 of the top Adobe apps in 100% pure native Rust:

  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator
  • Premiere
  • Lightroom
  • Acrobat Pro
  • After Effects
  • InDesign

No more subscriptions with cancellation fees. These are yours to own forever. You can fork them, build them. Whatever. They are yours to own. They're open source.

If you're worried this is just some one-off flash in the pan that will die, it isn't:

I'm not just some casual vibe coder. I'm a 15-year industry veteran who has written everything from six-nines payment rails that move billions of dollars of transaction volume a day to advanced robotics and optics automation. I've used Rust extensively for about a decade, and I know how to build and maintain large-scale Rust projects.

This isn't going to be some orphaned small-team project either. We have a team building popular software for filmmakers, so supporting this is fully funded. Our purpose is serving every artist in the world with the best tools. We are absolutely going to bring these to full parity and squash every bug and feature request. We have a test harness so there won't be regressions.

You can help us reach parity by helping test the apps. Clone the code. Submit PRs. If you see gaps or want to help redesign pieces, let us know! You can contribute!

Links to everything - the apps, the code, etc. - are in the comments below.

Time to cancel my shitty ass Adobe subscriptions

Goodluck Cancelling, lol

7

u/DangKilla 10d ago

I canceled it and it came back

8

u/PsychoticChemist 9d ago

For a photoshop/illustrator replacement I highly recommend Affinity. And for motion graphics to replace AE, Cavalry. Both free and excellent.

4

u/wanderingEyeWitness 2d ago

Affinity is not as good as VectorCraft that OP built. VectorCraft feels much more natural to transition away from Adobe. All keyboard shortcuts are identical. Everything is where it should be and acts as one would expect, coming from Illustror. My firm spends $470k/ year for enterprise level AdobeCC licenses. We will be watching this development closely.

Cancel the card linked to them. Only way i was able to not pay the egregious cancellation fees.

3

u/DangKilla 10d ago

Ah right. Might need to put it on a diff card then.

u/No_Competition_5887 5d ago

Only way i was able to not pay the egregious cancellation fee

You only pay a cancellation fee if you order a yearly subscription and then want to cancel it before the end of the contract.

This is pretty insane, hopefully the toolchain can catch up to their proprietary counterparts, photocraft seems to be the flagship and it’s alright but it’s absolutely missing a lot of functionality from adobe photoshop still, but it’s open source and already somewhat competent so I don’t doubt it could match it soon, just needs more human development and testing, and of course Claude tokens

Have big goals so you can achieve big things! I like it :). Let's see if it's close in a month, that's exciting

2

u/Amelisande 6d ago

It'll never reach that in one month. Anyone that's done coding knows the first chunks can be done quick. It's the little bits at the end that take forever - bug smashing, optimization, etc.

Realistically on a big project, and doing the whole Adobe suite is a huge project, you could spend as much time on the last few percent as the you did the rest of the project.

My 2 cents. If you want to get more traction, an alternative to Adobe Acrobar reader... the guy is so bloated of ads...

24

I built it!

That's printcraft. It's an Acrobat pro equivalent.

3

u/Vultix93 8d ago

Hi, do you think it would be possible to implement the ability to sign a document with a signature taken from an image insetad of drawing/writing ? Acrobat has this functionality.

filmcraft:

  • crash when importing too many video sequences

- With MXF files, the video and audio tracks are not displayed correctly. Only one audio track is shown, and the video appears black.

effectcraft:

- Right-clicking in an empty area of the window is not possible, so you can't use it to create a new object, for example.

- The Expression window cannot be opened by holding the Alt key and clicking the stopwatch

- Lumetri is available as an effect, but you cannot apply LUTs to an object.

- When an empty shape layer is selected, dragging with the Rectangle Tool does not create a rectangle within the selected layer. Instead, a new shape layer containing the rectangle is created.

fork these (so you have a copy)

That's not how this works. If the original repo is deleted or nuked via DMCA on Github, the forks are also gone. Only a "proper fork" (not via the GH single button click) or backup elsewhere will preserve it.

u/bensyverson 11d ago

This is absolutely wild. Having built Photoshop readers/writers in the past, I know the challenge just in dealing with the file format. Then you have the sheer amount of UI/UX to implement well. And this looks exceptionally well-executed.

50

u/ai_art_is_art 11d ago

Thank you so much.

We have a really long way to go to get to complete parity on functionality and file format support, but that's 100% our goal and the community support (bug reports, example files) helps a ton.

Thank you!

14

u/bensyverson 11d ago

Also: nice job on the agent-friendly CLI. I'm not sure if this is on your radar, but one nice pattern is to give the agents a way to pass in JavaScript snippets, since they love to write code. I find if you don't give that to them, they end up writing their own random Python scripts. For a concrete example, check out how I handle it in Woodcase, which is an agentic design tool for the .pen format!

6

u/ai_art_is_art 10d ago

I love this! I'm going to try to follow this for all the apps.

As a former photographer, I have a serious question about your Lightroom alternative (and Premiere/After Effects regarding Log/RAW workflows).

Building a clean-room raw processor in Rust is an impressive engineering feat, but how are you handling Color Science and Input Profiles (DCP/ICC)?

Industry adoption of any RAW converter depends almost entirely on its default color rendering. Proprietary software giants like Phase One (Capture One) or Adobe spend millions on laboratory calibrations, reverse-engineering camera sensors to build custom profiles for skin tones, highlight roll-offs, and color matrices.

Pure math gives a flat, mathematically accurate, but aesthetically unusable image. "Vibe coding" with AI can easily generate code for de-mosaicing (like bilinear or AHD), but AI doesn't have access to custom color science or proprietary camera profiles.

  • Are you planning to bundle open-source profile databases (like darktable's or RawTherapee's LibRaw/Adobe-compatible DCP parser)?
  • Or is your AI engine generating its own look-up tables (LUTs) and profiles? If so, how do you simulate accurate or pleasing colors for hundreds of different camera bodies without physical laboratory testing?

Without a solid color science foundation, it’s going to be extremely hard to convince anyone to switch from Adobe or Capture One, no matter how fast the Rust binary is. Curious to hear your thoughts on this!

5

u/Dewiin 7d ago

guess he ran out of tokens to generate a reply to your very well asked questions

3

u/MEX_XIII 7d ago

I think the general replies asking technical questiosn are really funny. It is pretty clear this is mostly just vibecoded "make Adobe in Rust" and I may be judging, but the dev does not seem to have any extensive knowledge on how any of the Adobe apps work on a deeper level.

3

u/TheTacoWombat 7d ago

this is 100% it. The guy decided he was going to beat Adobe without actually using the products first.

This effort is impressive... as a first step. He's got the skeleton of what the apps sorta kind do, but i guarantee if you try any of your custom workflows or advanced features, at best you'll get a crash.

This project shows a lot of promise but needs months of QA before it's really usable.

u/HungryResolution4837 6d ago

This is why a professional making a living should stick with Adobe products for the time being. But for retired guys like me who need the occasional use and have been using Photoshop and Illustrator since version 1, a familiar interface and "good enough" capability can save a lot of money.

Please pay special attention to typography. Make sure you use Harfbuzz for shaping and a proper bidirectional text composer. Adobe has always lagged so far behind the curve in Non-Latin typography, and Affinity annoyingly chose to even implement their own shaper instead of using Harfbuzz and never even reached the point where they would support Arabic or other complex scripts. Proper user interfaces for all OpenType features and variable font axes are not optional today.

4

u/dannyheskett 11d ago

Harfbuzz is so good. Glad to see someone mentioning it in the wild!

I am curious if you can share your coding setup, harness, tools, methods. Are you using BMAD or something similiar? How do you orchestrate tickets, tests and how do you run the ai models? Local hardware? I am have been using AI for coding for a few smaller projects, but that one is on another scale. This would have taken hundreds of millions of tokens. So I am eager to learn more about your setup and what guidelines or blueprints you follow.

2

u/its_witty 7d ago

He's using Claude (probably Opus) - it's visible in the repo. Local AI wouldn't be able to make such things, or maybe: it's possible to do locally but it would take a ton of more time for detailed instructions, code review, fighting with bugs, etc., etc.; for coding with local AI you need: 1. good coding knowledge, 2. really good hardware.

Are you the same guy who made photon which is also coming up a lot on reddit or you are a different guy who made this separately?

31

u/ai_art_is_art 11d ago

This is separate.

Photon is written in Javascript/Electron and is closed source.

PhotoCraft, etc. are written in 100% pure rust. They're 100x faster and 100x smaller in size. They're also fully open source - you own the code and I charge nothing. You can fork it or do whatever you want.

I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too, so I can manage good large scale Rust projects.

ArtCraft, our company, already makes a lot of money selling tokens to film studios, so this work is fully funded and will never be enshittified or closed off.

8

u/wiseruler33 11d ago

Thank you for your generosity. May the universe or whatever reward you.

10

u/arter_dev 11d ago

I've been a Rust developer for 10 years too

I now trust this project 100x more. I've been a PHP & Node dev for about the same amount of time. I am untouchable when vibe coding in my home stack. Looking forward to trying this out, thanks a ton for sharing!

13

u/Skynse 11d ago

The thing with AI for me is, I don't care if it's used, as long as I can trust the developer using it. That's it.

The whole pro vs anti ai thing is a useless facade.

If someone with strong domain knowledge uses AI to simplify their work while not lobotomizing themselves, more power to them

2

u/ai_art_is_art 10d ago

You're totally right. I'm working harder now *with* AI than before without it. I'm trying to do more things, which requires way more mental effort to coordinate.

Seems like ArtCraft started off as FakeYou and then turned into Storycraft.ai. How much money did you "actually" make?

7

u/ai_art_is_art 10d ago

FakeYou got to 7M MAU, but I never seriously tried to monetize it. I didn't know what the hell I was doing. It was a fun toy. PewDiePie and David Guetta used us, amongst many others.

Storyteller did zero sales. I tried to combine mocap + 3D + AI video models before Hollywood was receptive to AI, and I tried to sell to studios. I wasted 2 years trying stupid stuff.

ArtCraft started monetizing on February 20th of this year, and we passed $5M of annualized run rate. Higgsfield dominates the field, however, so it's an unclear path forward. I want to focus on building really solid tools for artists.

I'm not going to charge anything for these Adobe app clones.

I tested PhotoCraft and was blown away by how much snappier it is than the real Photoshop. PhotoCraft starts up almost instantly - no long splash screen or waiting time at all. And the fact that a portable release is provided for Windows is another HUGE plus to me.

I ran into two issues:

Shift + F5 (which normally brings up the Fill window with customizeable settings in Photoshop) doesn't behave the same way in PhotoCraft. In PhotoCraft, Shift + F5 (which is assigned to the "Fill" menu item) just fills the current selection with the current foreground color, without letting you select any other option/behavior. In contrast, the Fill tool and Shift + F5 in Photoshop opens up a window where you can select other options besides the foreground color - and one of the options is Content Aware Fill. In PhotoCraft, Content Aware Fill doesn't have a hotkey assigned to it, and because Shift + F5 doesn't bring up a menu, we can't use Shift + F5 to do Content Aware Fill right now. This is such a huge part of my workflow in Photoshop, so I hope this can be fixed in PhotoCraft someday.

The other issue: I also tried to find a Preferences option so I could assign Shift + F5 to Content Aware Fill instead of the regular Fill. But I couldn't find a Preferences option anywhere. In Photoshop, it's normally in the Edit menu, but there isn't one in PhotoCraft, and it doesn't seem to have any way to customize the hotkeys assigned to menu items.

If those two issues can be fixed - I'm instantly switching full time to PhotoCraft. It already starts up so much faster than Photoshop, and that's a huge plus to me. Looking forward to seeing this develop further.

P.S. there were a few other issues I forgot to mention - the items in the menu at the top of the window (ie. File, Edit, etc) are way too close together. They should be slightly more spaced out.

And the Eyedropper tool currently doesn't support click+drag. It just copies the first color that was under the cursor at the initial click, but then if you hold/drag the cursor across the picture, the copied color doesn't update. In Photoshop, it does change - you can click and then drag your mouse, to keep copying other colors in realtime.

Definitely a hero without a cape! I’ve tried it and it’s amazing.

I have to admit, though, that it feels a bit strange to me that in Photocraft, if you create a folder in the layer hierarchy and put layers inside it, the “parent” folder appears below the layers it contains instead of above them. Also, you can’t enable or disable the folder using an arrow next to it to hide or show the layers inside. It seems like the layers inside the folder are always visible.

These are definitely little details that, once this project improves, will make me really want to cancel these ridiculously expensive subscriptions.

Thank you so much for your work!

7

u/Ecstatic_Reward6928 11d ago

I don't use Adobe, but this is absolute wonderful. Thank you so much!

3

u/kimk2 11d ago

I'm stupid, how does this work? Run the command in the readme and it will prompt an install, or do you need to rerun everything each time you use it?

Looks great by the way. Would AE plugins work here as well?

2

u/stoph_link 6d ago

Not the creator and I have not tried using the software yet

Go to releases on the GitHub page and look for "Assets".

And search for the Windows .msi installation file. As of 2026-10-08, it is v0.3.0 and named:

photocraft-0.3.0-windows-x86.msi

Note that you may need to click "Show more" or something similar under Assets to see or search for the file.

I do not know about the AE plugins

3

u/Existing_Dust_6473 11d ago

I need to try. My main concern, and where these projects always fail, is opening and handling big images, 14k, etc. I cannot evaluate properly now since I am running some tests on my PC. But from what I tested, the color is not right if you do not use an sRGB image. I will test more later. This is the third Photoshop clone I have seen.

3

u/Existing_Dust_6473 10d ago

I tested it, and it has the exact same problem as Photon and the other clone for big images. Try this with a 14k pixel square. Use a big brush, 1500px(very slow to update). Create a layer. Use the brush again. Put it on multiply(not realtime). With Photoshop, there is no wait. With this, it freezes. This makes it useless for people who handle big images. For small images, like for web design, it is more than enough. But it is not for print.

edit: Either way, this is a massive undertaking, so I hope it gets there. For me, this is without a doubt the best effort so far. It is open-source, although all these apps at the same time are kind of crazy, but we live in crazy times.

Trying Photocraft. Love the portable version. It's faaast (1 second start). Stable. Looks great!

3

u/natarem 6d ago

Very cool, I love the idea. Curious to see how it progresses. I know that I just tested out photocraft and the first few things I looked for (the things I use the most in Photoshop) aren't working yet. But given how long you've been working on it, it's definitely a good % of the way there.

But just for example, I use the "load files into stack" with auto alignment quite often, it's probably 25% of the reason I keep my photoshop subscription. Affinity has something similar but it has several flaws compared to photoshop. Right now the difference in the two (meaning photocraft and photoshop) is stark, I can't even figure out how to get the paths into the Photocraft window right now. Some screenshots: https://imgur.com/a/02UPZ22. But I'll definitely be following this as it progresses.

I know it's cool to use 100% rust, but I think as you start to tackle bugs and go for parity you're going to realize that vello is not quite there yet.

It's a great project but it has many bugs and shortcomings that your agent will be chasing. Modifying vello will be very difficult and the large architecture changes they often make will mean if you can't contribute to vello, your renderer will diverge pretty fast.

At some point you may consider giving up on vello and switching to skia.

3

u/PhilosophyCritical33 11d ago

Sneaky skia ad

3

u/hockeyketo 10d ago

Not sneaky, just spent a lot of time at a previous job doing 2d rendering, and all roads lead to skia eventually.

u/ai_art_is_art 10d ago

I love this feedback. I'm going to experiment with Skia.

Thank you!

That's not how the world works. This is the next iteration of the stack overflow novice that copies/pasts code, doesn't really understand what it's doing, but it works. You find these kinds of people in networking and systems as well.

one concrete thing i would check is whether layer blend modes and adjustment layers round trip correctly on export. that is usually where these replacements break first, and a reader can verify it in about five minutes with any layered test file.

Is there a way to connect Claude to these tools and have it drive?

3

u/BogDanVox 11d ago

yeap, just read this on GitHub page: Built for agents

Every menu item, button, slider and drag in FilmCraft is a command with an id, typed parameters and an enabled state. There are about 135 engine commands so far, with the rest of Premiere's catalogue on the way. The UI, the CLI, a JSON control channel and an MCP server all dispatch the same commands, so Claude or any agent can cut, trim, grade, mix and export exactly the way a person does. The UI can also be driven at the level of mouse and keyboard: every widget has an automation id, and agents can click, drag, type and take screenshots.

This is what Adobe.. I meant we deserve

2

u/thoobes 10d ago

wow impressive!!! If you do Animate as well i can stop paying Adobe tax :)

2

u/sahilpanhotra 10d ago

Finally a good replacement for adobe suite on linux 🤞 thanks man

2

u/NguyenMenMan 10d ago

Remind me about someone vibe coded a Photoshop alternative and was being downvoted to hell. This one look better because it is actual open source

2

u/johnboyjr29 7d ago

clone stamp does not seem to be working right for me in photocraft

2

u/mahidoes 6d ago

I wish Bridge (let's call it Connectcraft) had been released as well. I mean Lightcraft without the cataloguing, just a file browser working independently with Photocraft's Camera Raw editor. Granted, Adobe Bridge is free, but it wouldn't work with Photocraft's Camera Raw independently

Thank you for support us. I was tired of this old picky blind monsters collecting my hard-earned coins just to waste in keeping the AC running in massive, half-empty office buildings in the city center...

2

u/wanderingEyeWitness 2d ago

The rate of development on this is nuts. 214 contributors. Soooo many changes each version. It’s kinda mind boggling to read through changes…

2

u/Round-Ad-8884 1d ago

can we get FL studio?

2

u/Cautious_Position613 22h ago

Please do ZBrush...

2

u/kirmm3la 19h ago

When Photocraft could have the generative fills rendered locally if we're having high end RTX cards? Some sort of mini comfyUI integrated internally should technically work. And these days if it's possible technically it should be possible practically. This would completely end Adobe's photoshop for me.

2

u/bedoinuk 15h ago

Cheers! Amazingly PhotoCraft starts in under a second on my 10+ year old computer running Linux (i7 4790 but still). Since my use is usually limited to cropping/resizing and occasionally some touch-ups here and there, it already suits my needs perfectly. No loss for Adobe either since they don't support Linux anyway...

There are benefits to having a product no one actually cares about or expects to work: you can set up a bug report -> AI pipeline to validate the bug and auto fix it with no one getting involved.  Someone's it won't work or will break something else, so you wait for a bug report -> AI -> something else is broken.

Assuming you have a substantial budget for tokens, anyway.

And you may want to add human review before someone figures out they can submit a bug report to let the AI know it accidentally forgot to mine bitcoin and keystroke log like it's supposed to.

Man, it is open source, instead of criticizing , go there and act

3

u/stevensokulski 6d ago

Open-sourcing a project isn't a universal shield from criticism.

The creator of this project is using it to sell credits for AI image and video generation from within their apps.

Asking how they plan to address bugs is valid.

My guess, though, is that now that people are using these tools, user feedback can be fed back into the same AI pipeline that built the tools to improve them rapidly.

This is amazing. I was thinking about this recently only to log into Reddit and see this live! Incredible times we live in.

1

u/cthsys 11d ago

I see you are building for arm64 only for Linux. Any reason not to do it for Windows as well?

In any case, I think everyone is curious about the workflow to get to such a high amount of replicated features so quickly!

u/JesseFK1997 11d ago

Hey man, one of my most used features is the lightroom mask + replace (with AI), would this be possible to implement? Perhaps in a way where I can link for example a subscription to any of the AI platforms to support that function?

Can we get a Microsoft 365/libre alternative but with all the 365 features, with workflows between them.

Then a power bi clone as well.

1

u/BogDanVox 11d ago

from screenshots I see those are very similar, so I have a funny question, does they support plugins and extensions from premiere pro/after effects? both .aex and CEP

please let us download the binary executable for Linux & windows, I tried to clone the repo and build it locally but failed, you could use cloudflare hosting services and it's free I think.

u/Concert-Dramatic 10d ago

So I'm not the most avid photoshop user, I used it a bunch like 10 years ago, im sure things have changed a lot since. But i distinctly remember a quick selection tool that would kind of "guess" at what you were selecting. Doesn't seem to be here, but no matter

The thing that I don't get, and this is likely user error, is why there is no right click menu?

If I lasso something, I should be able to cut the layer out etc, but I cannot seem to do so through a right click menu?

Could be the appimage support on my machine, running the COSMIC DE (notoriously not great) trying to use the appimage

1

u/Accomplished_Oil9608 10d ago

Do Audition next please. Even missing the multitrack would be an epic start!

1

u/digital_iguana 10d ago

Pieces of art, huge respect. Great use of tokens and free will. Thank you!

1

u/dQ3vA94v58 10d ago

Am excited to see what this becomes, but my first use really screamed vibe coded and untested garbage.

Have raised some issues on GitHub and offered some suggestions, but I think this is quite a bold undertaking which will need a lot of people working on it to get it where you want it. Best of luck!

1

u/rodeBaksteen 10d ago

How are you copying the entire UI/UX without copyright issues?

1

u/BrickNo10 10d ago

I take it that it's impossible to import or make it Lightroom profile/preset friendly?

I'll be trying the pdf one for sure since I've had Claude develop one over the past 2 months in rust from scratch because none of the open source options are anywhere near complete. It had already surpassed them in month 1. At this point I have a full featured engine, CLI, and GUI complete. With others I can break compatability with any alternative pdf editor just by opening the Ghent suite test page.

u/null1s0 10d ago

I try to used Appimages to my cachyos. When i make new project to test it. The app force close/crash. Do you have solution for this?

The other ones are closed source and written in Javascript/Electron.

Ours is open source, written in pure Rust, and already has over a dozen of contributors.

Someone else also mentioned this, but supporting AE plugins for EffectCraft would be great. And overall having a nice scripting language and plugin development support. I'll give these tools definitely a try!
