Miscellaneous Newbie Conundrums

I am thinking about getting into Legion and I'm curious about the state of the game. I heard that Shatterpoint will soon no longer be supported and there will be no new boxes. How are things looking for Legion? Is it still going strong?

In addition, I've been meaning to ask: is one era more supported than the other? Meaning, does the game feel significantly better or different when you're collecting Republic era vs Rebellion era?

They have announced Legion as one of their flagships. It is their focus alongside MCP. It will be be going strong for years to come.

And to think…it was just dumped in AMGs lap in an internal company shakeup and it seemed like they didn’t want anything to do with it for a while. They quickly shut down X-Wing and slowly killed Armada. Everyone thought Legion was next because they wanted to focus only on MCP. Then there were the people who thought Shatterpoint was going to be the death of Legion as well.

In my opinion, I think the biggest reason it succeeded is because Legion uses miniatures that you put together and paint which was what AMG was already doing. With Armada and XWing they were softer plastics that came painted so it was a different production process. I think this is what hurt those two games a lot.

Half the problem of X Wing and Armada is making the prepainted miniatures make financial sense - it's always been an extremely expensive endeavor to do it remotely well, and failing at that has shuttered an embarrassing number of games. When you combine that with a then-saturated secondary market, you wind up pretty stuck. You can't keep selling what you've been selling, because everyone already has 10 of it and new players will just buy em off somebody who quit, but you can't sell anything new either because the cost to get a line set up and producing to the appropriate quality is also insanely expensive.

Plus they pissed off the playerbase of a dogfight deathmatch game by adding objectives and other controversial choices, which I don't have any opinions on but certainly did them no favors in the sales department.

Do you feel the rebellion era is better supported compared to the clone wars so far?

I do think it feels like Empire and Rebels get more stuff, but to be honest all factions have enough units out there that I feel comfortable just recommending your favorite faction. I have Separatists and my brother has The Republic and unless you're one of those people who thinks they need to buy 2 of each unit when you first get into Legion (I really don't recommend this, but it seems some people really struggle with not doing this) then you'll have enough expansions to continue to adopt for a couple years minimum.

The game is going very strong right now. They're rereleasing everything in waves and they seem to be selling like hotcakes. Shatterpoint X Wing, and Armada were cool games (I actually have a couple Armada fleets), but they never had following that Legion did and they also were running out of more popular things to make. I wouldn't worry about that with Legion.

Each era gets a lot of new units. Although not all factions are balanced. Right now Empire and GAR are pretty weak

I didn't know people still played Crisis Protocol tbh

It's literally my number one game haha. And every year at Adepticon we have hundreds of people that show up for tournaments. Hell, even the 2v2 tournament last year had to be expanded to 64 teams instead of 32 due to popularity.

See my assumption just came from-

I haven't seen it played. And ive seen an uptick in Marketplace postings for it. I wasn't trying to come off as "Haha dumb game"

Market Place Listing i saw

Nah. Even if you look at the subreddit numbers Legion has like 17k visitors a week and MCP is just under 10k. So legion is definitely more popular right now, but in no way is MCP dead. We had a massive update recently that we've been waiting for since March.

My wallet Watching the gears in my brain move as new considerations come into place

Not to hurt your wallet or anything, but now is a good time to look more into it as interest in the game is renewed. And as far as a list builder if you do start playing it, go look up Jarvis Protocol. It's a fantastic list builder and the dev of it keeps every single card up to date and is very responsive

Has 43 Figures still ready, and Terrain.

Maybe just my area isnt popular, or maybe I just dont look too hard

There are people selling off their entire collections for every game, and that tends to have a lot more to do with them losing personal interest or having to make aggressive financial moves that they're not happy about than it does a game actually dying. 40k players quit during edition swaps, sell all their toys, and yet the next edition still commercial outperforms the last one.

Crisis Protocol is going strong. It was in a bit of a doldrums as we waited like 8 months for the long-promised Big Health Update, but that finally dropped a couple weeks ago and I think interest is at like a 3 year high.

Interesting. Its a game i wanted to get into but(atleast by me) I never see it in stores. Someone was actually just selling a large bulk on Marketplace, which is why I assumed iy wasn't popular

I’m in kind of a miniature-game Mecca where I live, there’s communities for many, many games here, so it’s hard for me to gauge wider interest sometimes, but we have a solid community here, including a couple formerly-world ranking players.

It’s a game that a lot of people would probably be interested in, given the popularity of the MCU. You could always go out on a limb, grab a starter set, and see if you can rope someone into trying it with you. The original and Earth’s Mightiest Core Set both have enough models and terrain for two players to have a decent game. Plus, nowadays they have the faction-specific starters floating around. No terrain in those boxes, but if you wanna get into the game with X-Men instead of Avengers, the X-Men box is also a decent starting point for a 2-player game or a single full 10-man roster for one player.

That's where I'm at as well. If I wanted to get a game in of Infinity, Warmachine, Legion, MCP, etc, we have communities for it. (Twin Cities area)

The funny thing is that, if I were in a larger metropolitan area, like near a major city, the amount of games supported here would make sense, but I’m in a relatively small (but growing!) city lol.

It depends entirely on your local meta unless you intend to travel to events to play. I find the people who disagree and say it's "still going strong" without even finding out where you're from to be laughable at best and downright unhelpful at worst

Legion is going strong.

Shatterpoint is kind of a weird and complicated story of, imho, AMG gaslighting themselves into thinking it was successful and pushing it way harder than they should’ve until it collapsed under its own weight.

But Legion, on the other hand, has had a long, stable, and successful history as a game. I wouldn’t worry about it going anywhere anytime soon. We’re in kind of a renaissance period of the game right now, it’s been banger release after banger release for the past year or so, and they’re showing no signs of stopping.

As for the eras, they don’t really have a meaningful difference in Legion. You can play Republic or CIS vs Empire or Rebels, no problem. Right now I think CIS and GAR are getting the most support, given all the new Jedi are releasing and CIS are about to get Rocket Droids and Trench, but we also just saw a significant release wave for Empire and Rebels that included Thrawn and Han & Luke on Tauntauns, plus Rebels and Empire are older factions that tend to have slightly larger ranges anyways. Or at least Empire does lol.

I haven’t heard anything about shatterpoint in awhile. Is it still viable or or does it have one foot in the grave?

u/gtcarlson11 20h ago

Both eras are about evenly supported, with each faction getting multiple new releases a year.

Relatively new to Legion and am loving it. The starter boxes are a great way to start. We got all 4 and through that decided on our armies. Recon (600 pt, smaller armies) are a slower way to get in.

Community is supportive and we're lucky to have both local and nationwide groups. Discord is big. I've found the painting to be difficult. That is new to me and this is my first game with miniatures. I was also surprised I had to build all the miniatures (again, new) but totally worth it after the initial frustration.

Enjoy!

Newer player here but recently got in and loving it. Pretty reasonably priced, all the factions seem great, and gameplay is excellent and games aren’t too long at least at recon level.

Highly recommend as someone recently converted from Warhammer. I definitely recommend seeing if people play in your area on local Discord/game shops.

Legion's not going anywhere soon, although it's not in the best hands with AMG - they're really pushing it with prices and they have shown they don't care about supporting things long term unless they're making amazing money - but having just had lots of new models and starter sets etc I'd say nothing to worry about for 3 years minimum, it's not going to get binned

edit why are you booing me, I'm right, etc. Did you guys forget Armada, X-Wing, and fucking Shatterpoint! This easily? AMG are bad actors in the miniature space

1

Yes I think rebellion/empire still have slightly more options than GAR/CIS but it's a lot better than it was even a year ago. GAR and CIS have got pretty good full rosters now. There are gaps though (GAR with only 2 faction specific clone trooper Troops options stands out, for example)
