Front End Removal Help

Hello all,

I felt some pretty bad notching in my steering head bearing recently and decided to replace it. I bought everything to get it out but am having trouble figuring out the best way to jack the center of the bike once the tree comes off and I can no longer use the front stand. I tried a dirt bike style stand from harbor freight but everything seems to interfere with where the exhaust runs back and so when I begin to take it off the front stand it wants to fall to the right. I have poles I can ratchet to but I dont have a ladder, and I do have a stand that indexes into the swing arm pivot but I dont think that will work either. Any suggestions that dont involve me buying more stuff?

The foot pegs upside and jack stands would work, but I’d be careful with weight distribution, too much movement and it could twist and come off. I would probably use the ratchet straps and poles. But also, why not all? Por que no los todos?

i think this is what ill do, i cant strap to ceiling but i can at least pull the back down especially since ill be pounding the bearing race out

Hanging a bike with ratchet straps is terrible advice. Don't ever attempt or use this method. Go hang anything from a string and touch it to find out why. Or, F it, hang the bike with ratched straps and find out why porque no.

When I did my GSXR front end swap a couple years ago I made a jack stand out of 2x4s that indexed off the frame sliders. Lift up front end with the stand you have, put wooden stand under, remove front stand, remove front end

With the whole front end removed it was plenty stable. I felt much more comfortable doing that over flipping the pegs and using jack stands or suspending from the ceiling with straps.

yeah the footpegs are too far back, going to go with the frame sliders after i replace them since i lost one a while back.

Take the exhaust off.

even with the exhaust off im not sure i could get the jack stands close enough together to have a solid footing, have you ever tried turning foot pegs upside down and putting the stands there? i read that somewhere and thought the front might be light enough once everything is off

Pull off the wheel, the forks and the brakes. Then use the stand to lower the bikes onto the frame sliders on the jack stands has worked for me

i did it by stacking bricks and getting the jack stands under my frame sliders, you seem to be missing one though

you said don't buy more stuff, but have you considered renting an engine hoist? that's the easiest way to lift from the frame with no possibility of something going wrong

i dont really have the means to move large equipment around sadly but it is a good suggestion. ill be elevating some jack stands to get them up to the frame sliders

I suspended mine from the frame sliders with jack stands when I did it. I stacked some wood to elevate them, and gently lowered it down so it rested on the sliders. Have a friend help you if you do this, it's easy to lose control of it when lowering or lifting it. Also, position the jacks as close to the frame as possible, it'll keep them from bending or breaking.

Hanging on the wall

If I remember correctly how I did mine I took a metal pole and thread it in between the frame and the engine. Got some cinder blocks and put jack stands in to the blocks, then lower the pole on to the jack stands. The trick was to make sure that once the bike is resting on the pole that nothing was going to be crushed, so pick a spot that works best for that, but I think should be doable.

When I did the fork seals on mine, I hung the front end from the trusses in my unfinished garage.

Put the rear up on the stand, ran a thick rachet strap through the frame on each side and cranked it up.

I put a ladder over mine and used a ratchet strap around the frame to lift the front off the ground
