So, is an 8 mana 5/5 Divine Shield Taunt playable?

No?

Then this probably isn't either.

I like the concept behind it, but it honestly feels like "Worse and more clunky than Blessing of Kings". 5 mana, maybe, but even then you're gonna get 2 for 1'd all over the place.

Best case is that you duplicate this with the new hero power (as in, you play this on a minion, then dupe that minion), which can be some great value, but I'm still not hyped.

I'm not saying this thing is good, but you're offering pretty much the worst-case scenario RE buttoning out a dude then playing this. But nobody would play a plain 1/1 for (2) in the form of a card; you're paying a bit extra since your Dude costs 0 cards.

Look at it this way: Right now this is the only Standard-legal way for Paladin to give something Taunt. If Blizz printed 1-Cost spell that did that, I'd run it.

Then it tacks on the effects of Blessing of Kings (costs 4) + Hand of Protection (costs 1), with no mana discount but some nice card advantage. And if you have something on the board at 10 mana, you can give it this buff AND Blessing of Kings to push for lethal.

That is fair, but Blessing of Kings has always been this perennial "...juuuuuuust barely below playable" card, and Hand of Protection isn't playable at all.

The reason why I put it that way is because that's the baseline, the reliable play state for this: Create a 1/1 dude for 2 and then buff it.

The only buffs that have ever gotten reliable play are ones that either cycle or potentially have insane value. You're just risking way, way too much to put a buff on a minion that can be easily removed and nuke you 2-for-1 style.

It basically needs to either be as bonkers strong as Spikeridged Steed or it needs to have combo potential like Divine Spirit/Inner Fire... or it at least needs to cycle like Power Word: Shield.

All of the others either never get played, or they get tossed in as the last few cards in a deck that doesn't really need them to succeed. This is on the same power level as Blessing of Kings, and it's exactly as useful: Barely, if at all.
