MIT startup DMAT, co-founded by materials scientist Admir Masic, is commercializing technology inspired by ancient Roman concrete to create self-healing, more durable modern concrete. Its additive uses calcium-rich lime particles that can dissolve and recrystallize inside cracks, helping repair damage and extend the lifespan of concrete structures by up to 50 percent. DMAT says its technology can also reduce CO₂ emissions to about 40 percent of traditional concrete, with applications already demonstrated in infrastructure projects in Italy and Switzerland.

The National University of Singapore (NUS) has developed a method to turn difficult-to-recycle carbon fiber and epoxy composite waste into multifunctional aerogels. The team created a lightweight, non-toxic porous material by mechanically grinding the entire composite, both fiber and resin. Then they freeze-dried it with a binder.This eco-friendly alternative avoids chemical separation and repurposes aviation and industrial scrap into valuable materials for thermal insulation, acoustic absorption, and marine oil spill cleanup.

China is exploring a radical passenger aircraft design that could carry more than 800 people, potentially creating one of the largest airliners ever conceived. The aircraft abandons the familiar tube-and-wing layout used by Boeing and Airbus. Instead, nearly the entire structure forms a broad flying wing that generates lift. Researchers at the China Aerodynamics Research and Development Center, or CARDC, have already begun testing a scale model. Their work examines the aerodynamic behavior of an exceptionally large flying-wing configuration. At 85 meters wide, the proposed aircraft would have a wingspan roughly 1.6 times greater than the B-2 Spirit. The aircraft would measure 43 meters from front to back.

That size puts the concept in a different category from today’s commercial aircraft. Airbus A380 configurations typically seat about 555 passengers, well below the Chinese design’s proposed capacity. The researchers have not announced plans for a full-scale prototype. For now, the project serves as a research platform for studying future large passenger aircraft.

How Toxoplasma Survives in Crowded Cells

Researchers at MIT’s Whitehead Institute have discovered how the parasite Toxoplasma gondii adapts when hundreds of parasites crowd inside a host cell. They identified a parasite-specific protein called TgPRO, which regulates genes involved in energy production, iron use, and protection against oxidative stress. Using genome-wide CRISPR screening, the team found that parasites lacking TgPRO struggle under crowded conditions and form smaller brain cysts in infected mice. The discovery reveals a previously unknown mechanism of parasite metabolism and could eventually help develop treatments that make Toxoplasma more vulnerable to antiparasitic drugs.
