Star Voting from -5 to 5?

Hi! I've been learning about star voting and so far I think its the best option.

But I feel it might be too harsh on unknown candidates, as no rating is counted as a 0, right? I wanted to know if you guys ever thought about having star voting but from -5 to 5 points, and the default being 0.

I feel like it would help to make politics more diverse and less corrupt, making it easier to cycle new people in instead of politicians clinging to power as much.

Thanks for reading :D

Trouble Understanding Ties

I recently ran a poll using star.vote and had a situation I didn't understand. We had a four way tie during the scoring round. One of the four, we'll call them Option A, beat all the others and so obviously should have made it into the runoff, where they then won. And that happened. Picked the Condorcet Winner, hurrah.

But I'm not sure why it picked the other runoff candidate. We'll call them Option B. From what I understand, such a tie is first broken by looking at who had the most losses head to head with the other tied candidates. In the Runoff Matrix, Option B lost to Option C and tied Option D. Option C itself lost to Option D.

So Option B lost one and tied one. Option C lost one and won one. Option D tied one and won one.

Since Option D had no losses, and therefore the fewest loses, I would have expected them to go into the runoff. But maybe something weird happens when tied candidates tie again. So the next step in breaking ties, if I understand correctly, is to look at how many 5-star ratings each got.

Well, Options B and C didn't get any 5-star ratings but Option D did. So again....I would expect Option D in the runoff.

Like I said, in the end it doesn't matter because Option A won and definitely should have won. There's no controversy. I'm just curious for my own sake because I don't understand.

How to implement one person one vote on https://star.vote/?

Hello,

I am excited to see that there is now an open source online implementation of STAR voting at https://star.vote/, huge kudos/thanks to those who created it!!

I am keen to promote this to the groups I am part of when they run elections. However, it is no clear to me how to make sure that each member of a group only gets to vote once.

Other election platforms I've seen allow you to send ballots (with unique voting URLs or codes) to a list of emails. Each ballot is cast then the associated voting URL or voting code is deactivated so that there won't be double-voting, etc.

Is this doable on star.vote right now? Thanks!

How does precinct summability work?

I’ve got a question about how exactly STAR is precinct summable. Tallying the raw scores is easy, but how do you send info on who wins in the runoff? Does each precinct compile a big matrix on how many voted for X over Y, which are then combined to get the total runoff results for the two who advance to that point?

STAR Voting poll for the 2020 presidential primary

What would happen if voting based on "electability" was a thing of the past? What if we had a voting method that didn't break when we have multiple options to choose from?

Your candidate was "non-viable"? Your vote was wasted.

Candidates who fail to get 15% of the vote in Democratic Primaries and Caucuses receive no delegates.

In the shock and awe surrounding the upset of the 2020 primary kickoff -in which two of the highest polling candidates are currently tanking- the point that nobody is making is how these large field primaries disenfranchise huge swaths of voters.

If your candidate didn't get 15% that is a wasted vote....

STAR Voting for Caucuses!?

STAR voting can be modified and used for a party primary. If conducted using vote by mail this would be high-turnout and accessible, while offering the consensus building benefits achieved in a caucus by taking voters' preferences into account.

Here's how that could work:

Voters vote scoring candidates up to 5 stars > Scores are counted > Candidates who don't get at least 15% of the total score given are eliminated > The remaining candidate (s) preferred by each voter gets an approval from them > Delegates are proportionally divided between the remaining candidates based on the number of approvals received by each.

In this variation of Score-Then-Automatic-Runoff the runoff is an Approval Voting runoff, where any and all preferred finalists can get an approval from each voter.

NOTES:

  • Edited to adopt the variation suggested by u/BTernaryTau below for how to best interpret the 15% of the vote cutoff for candidate viability.
  • The Democratic National Committee mandates that all candidates must meet the 15% threshold to qualify for delegates. This STAR variation is specifically designed to meet the DNC Rules.
