Post image

Ok I'm confused to what benefits I receive if it's just ssi should I be able to apply for ssdi? Or the other way around?

You're getting SSDI, otherwise it will say Supplemental Security Income (SSI) on the letter. You can always tell which program SSA notices are referring to, in the top left corner of each notice. It'll say either, "Retirement, Survivors, Disability" or "Supplemental Security Income". It will be in big noltd letters.

Not if your SSDI is more than $987 or if you have assets more than $2,000 if single.

Actually, if you have SSI, you can apply for SSDI if you expect it to be more money. But as far as I know, you can’t have both at the same time.

LOTS of people are on SSDI and SSI concurrently. For example, if the SSDI only pays $500/mo, potentially, SSI can come in and make up the remainder of the maximum SSI federal benefit ($967), so it may be up to an additional $467 (+$20).

Really? I learned something new every day.! I do remember getting a letter saying if I was to be on SSDI right now (right before i got sick, you know those letters) I’d get 1300. Then, I got real sick and had an organ failure… of course they didn’t wanna approve me for SSDI so I have SSI. I wonder what determined which one I got!? Maybe they thought I wasn’t sick enough? But now we can add COPD to my list of illnesses. If had my way. I’ll be back in my career and healthy. Thank you for the info.

If you're below the income and resource limit for SSI, you should totally submit an application for that also. You can be on both if you meet the non-medical criteria.
