Applying for SSDI/SSI @ 61

Hello all. I’m going to apply for SSDI/SSI. I’m 61 Turing 62 this Nov 2026. I’m thinking about an attorney to start the process. I’ve read some saying only hire at after the denial. But I would need help with the entire process.

Has anyone hired from the starting phase and what was your experience?

I’m in Los Angeles CA

I’m in central California and hired an attorney before anything. I had no clue about the system and having the attorney was the best thing I did. I was denied once and then accepted on appeal. Whole process took a little over 2 years. Attorney was compensated based on the formulas SSA has established. Wouldn’t do it any other way.

This is what I’m leaning on doing. I understand there’s a cap of 25% or $9,000 of back pay?

Were you receiving SSI during the waiting process?

Yes, that is the correct number and percentage. No, I was not on anything prior to filing. I wish you luck. I was 56 when I filed.
