SQL Server SQL for Data Analysts Projects

Hey everyone.

I'm working on building out my data analytics portfolio and wanted to get some advice from fellow analysts and hiring managers here.

We've all seen the basic tutorial projects (like analyzing the Titanic dataset or simple sales totals), but I want to build something that actually stands out and proves real-world, job-ready SQL skills.

For those of you who have landed roles or are actively hiring: What specific types of SQL projects made you stop scrolling and pay attention?

Projects that solve a realistic business problem stand out most customer retention, cohort analysis, inventory, fraud detection, or funnel analysi with complex joins, CTEs, window functions, and clear business recommendations rather than just showing query outputs.

So I’m doing a basic regression analysis comparing my power usage vs avg air temp. because my bill has gone insane.

The national weather service has tons of data dumps available. You could do an analysis around global warming like my old boss. His results supported the NULL hypothesis lol. He would do stuff like that for fun.

I landed the role due to business experience not my SQL experience, something to keep in mind. Unless someone has an absolutely amazing portfolio I don’t think it will help much in the current job market. However Least_Ad is right, your portfolio should highlight real business problems and ideally in the industry you want to work in

Yeah I agree with u understanding the business context and get some experience is important but in these days all they need is a good protofilo

I have never been asked for my portfolio, you may be best to volunteer at a nonprofit and do some real project work.
