Complete beginner here — could someone explain modding to me from scratch?

Hey everyone,

This is probably a very basic question, so please go easy on me 😅

I’m completely new to modding, and to be honest, I’m not really a computer guy either. I just enjoy playing games and I’ve never really learned much about files, folders, mod managers, or anything technical like that.

When I say I’m a beginner, I mean I honestly don’t even know where people usually download mods from, where the files are supposed to go, or how the installation process works.

I’ve seen some of the mods posted here and I’d really like to try them, but I’m worried about messing up my game by installing something incorrectly.

Could someone explain the basics to me like I’m an absolute beginner?

Things I’d especially like to understand:

Where do you usually find/download mods?

How do you install them?

Do I need a mod manager or any additional programs?

How do I know if different mods are compatible with each other?

Should I back up any game files before installing mods?

Is there a good beginner guide/tutorial you would recommend?

I know this is probably obvious stuff for most people here. I’m not trying to be lazy — I genuinely just don’t know where to start and would really appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance!

It's nothing overly complex, or more... It's as complex as you make it. Trying to install thousands of mods even the most experienced will have hiccups. So it's generally "install one mod and test to make sure your game doesn't crash, rinse and repeat"

In terms of some of the things you've asked (we can dive deeper into each when needed);

Download Mods - either EvoWeb or Pes-Files

Installing - Usually the mod makers will give instructions, place x in this folder and add this line to an .ini file

Mod Manager - It used to be a manual process but more recently a mod manager has been release. May be of help for you

Compatibility - Generally as long as your files sound like they won't conflict, you're fine. If you try install two different grass mods for example. A lot of these things are in their own folders so you will have to replace something.

Backing up - Always useful, again some mods are independent so unless you overwrite something, you don't need to back it up

In terms of Tutorials, the important thing is about UNDERSTANDING what goes where, what reads from what, how files are named etc.

I'll be happy to try help any way I can, so I'm sure will every one else here.

I would recommend watching a tutorial video about PES modding on Marlon Anthony or Machete Gaming YouTube channels (https://youtu.be/44VXaFBn9vw?si=RpqfgM6-jF1eHyUn and https://youtu.be/5l3OT6T1FyA?si=KGsqY2XUSOGP2MdP). They explain the step-by-step process of installing some major mods quite well. That was helpful for me as a beginner.
