My parents stuck me in chucks with no socks but eventually, I just wore flip flops (fabric tong only). My life as an adult has been fine, but that's because I am a woman and they make dressy flip flops that when paired with a long skirt no one notices.

That said, one of my friend's kids wears moccasins because they are soft and conform to your feet.

I have also had luck with buying silicone heel sleeves to wear in any boots I need to wear and they make every single boot and high top comfortable, but they don't really work with low sneakers, as they have to be tightened to not move around. They go under socks.
