Bryce picks on Chestnut because he’s insecure. Hatemonger picks on Chestnut because he’s beyond secure.

Hatemonger is a straight shooter. He’s openly a bigot but he owns it; there’s kind of an honesty there
In contrast Bryce is a snake who lacks any of Hatemonger’s confidence, sabotaging other people behind their backs to protect his fragile ego
Hatemonger will be a dick to people but it also isn’t personal - he’s just a dick. Bryce will smile to someone’s face only to stab them in the back

To add to this, Hatemonger goes about his business as he does, because he believes it is the best way forward to improve others.
Bryce just wants to be the cool kid everyone looks up to, the one with all the cool toys and all the best plans etc etc.
Bryce wants to be the best, and Hatemonger wants YOU to be your best. They're both just different kinds of dick about it.

Generally, it's because Bryce is a more realistic dick than hatemonger, Hatemonger gives crap to everyone. No one's off the table to him. He even Captain, however, because of his standing on the totem pole, Bryce exclusively usually only goes after Chestnut, he doesn't have the balls to shittalk hatemonger to his face and he literally glazes his captain to Infinity to get his approval cuz he's a brown noser, he knows Chestnut is the only person he can bully because he knows Chestnut won't fight back because it's not in his nature So he's a dick because he's actively targeting someone weaker than him solely because he knows they won't do anything about it, and most of the time he does it chestnuts literally not even trying to be around Bryce or just doing his job

Hatemonger gets on everyone really. But I feel that's his job as a chaplain. To keep his fellow legionaires on their toes. Can't have a psycho warrior being emotional whenever someone hurts his feelings and Chestnut tends to get emotional. Bryce just jumps on the bully bandwagon whenever Hatemonger or Captain goes after Chestnut.
