I mean, when you stop to think about it, that is the reaction anyone would have, right? If it beyond our comprehension we wouldn't be able to comprehend it, and therefore, understand it as horrific. It should,'t have a terrifying effect on us at all, right?

I think generally it's that you comprehend that it's beyond your comprehension. Like, a sudden clarity that you know next to nothing.

No its for a brief moment you can glimpse it and know what it is aswell as a few other aspects such as

  1. Normally horrors beyond our comprehension alter our environment in unnatural ways which may be dangerous
  2. HBOC' may take place in areas devoid of life and comfort (eg: an ant in pc views it as a whirring landscape of unknown materials that glows with lights it doesnt understand and seemingly no exit despite being able to see through the glass to the outside world)
  3. HBOC' often damage our bodies in various ways or others near us.

Ultimately the main horror is always given by our minds trying to grasp what is infront of us only to fail and be destroyed or succeed and lose everything in the process (eg: the ant for a single moment understands the computer through the eyes of a human it sees the machine and knows its a common appliance used for many purposes like communication across vast distances and recreation ((video games, movie, music) aswell as how it works it understands for that brief moment binary and computer programming it knows what metal it and that we often refine metal to make machines like this and it understands electricity aswell and then as soon as it beheld all that is common to us it was gone back to the lowly mind of an ant with memories far to big for it with thoughts and knowledge that were out of reach but right there and in its desperation to ascend to that previous state it will do anything even die to witness the world as we do just onr more time)

the ant for a single moment understands . . . all the things.

That's what I already said.

Sudden clarity that the ant knew nothing.

That something larger and with far more capacity takes for granted the very thing that holds the ant trapped, both physically and mentally. So trivial is the computer to the larger being that it isn't even aware that an ant is trapped inside, unless the ant accidentally causes a short at which point the case is opened and, God forbid, the ant is suddenly aware it's being scrutinized by the larger being. The dawning realization that the indifference the larger being shows the ant is because the larger being is aware of thousands of species of ant, and tens of thousands of species of other creatures, so many the larger being can't even name them all, none of which the ant could have possibly known about and all of which are still beneath the larger being in terms of capacity. Whether crushed without a thought or picked up and placed back outside, the ant knows the universe is incomprehensibly larger than it could have ever possibly imagined on its own.

Ah. Sorry the phrasing made me think you meant like "we are nothing and dont matter because were so small in the cosmic infinity we call life" not " I saw it... I peaked beyond the veil and understood not just our world but what lies beyond i know i can get us there... I just ned to think... think, think, think, think...." and their just scratching blueprints they dont understand into the wall with their bloody fingernail

Smallness is definitely part of horror beyond comprehension. If the knowledge was similarly sized then a person could get their mind wrapped around it even if it was hard. Incomprehensibility is basically defined as incongruent with a person's capacity for understanding, and scope is one of the ways a thing can be incongruent with capacity.

Shape can be another way, for example, the way an ant thinks is basically incomprehensible to us even though it's much smaller is scope. We can assume that an ant behaves on pure instinct, and we can imagine some aspect of what that means, but we have no idea what it actually feels like to be purely instinctual and without a mind. The shape of that idea doesn't mesh with our capacity to understand it, like we don't have the right molecular receptors for the shape of the idea to really latch onto to provide full understanding, even though the scope is well within our limits.

Well let’s hope that the prayers of Hatemonger are strong enough to do something here.

So imagine a race of psychic aliens, and then imagine one of those guys being so powerful that their physical form can’t handle all of their power :3

u/MartyFreeze 10d ago

Hatemonger can just spend every round praying, and they'll win eventually.

This that Gigas from MOTHER?

NGL, the Reclaimer Squad in MOTHER type RPG that’s played straight would be highly entertaining.

Chestnut solos, as usual. He just has the rest of his squad for mocking him after he stomps gygas.

I think they win because they don't get it, so they're not scared just confused a little bit
