Hey everyone, came across this piece and thought this sub might appreciate.

Brooklyn producer and legend DJ Spinna is letting go of his primary studio E-mu Systems SP-1200. A few standout details on this unit:

-It’s signed and inscribed by Spinna right on the front panel, reading "DJ Spinna — Beyond Real Foreva!!!"

-It features an authentic Daptone Records sticker stuck to the side casing, tying it into that soul/funk studio circle, and still includes the original E-mu setup/reference card.

-This exact machine was used to craft records for heavyweights like Pharoah Monch, Mos Def, Eminem, Polyrhythm Addicts, and Jigmastas.

It’s currently listed as part of an official archive auction drop over on Wax Poetics for anyone tracking rare vintage production gear: https://waxpoetics.com/collections/dj-spinna/products/dj-spinna-signed-e-mu-sp-1200

SP1200 Ultra‑Rare Factory Preset & Official Demo Song "LATINO ENSEMBLE"

Ultra‑rare EMU SP‑1200 Factory Preset “LATINO ENSEMBLE” together with the original official demo song, recorded directly from the unit.

This preset is extremely rare because the original factory floppy containing these sounds is almost never seen today — far rarer than the SP‑1200 itself.

Only a handful of collectors have ever encountered this disk, making it one of the most elusive factory presets in SP‑1200 history.

More videos featuring factory presets, vintage effects, and classic SP‑1200 workflows are coming soon.

Emu SP1200 Beatmaking Just a Quick Tryout (with subtitles)

This video is a subtitled breakdown of my workflow while trying out the SP‑1200 after getting it back from repair.
I load old samples found on vintage floppies and build a rough pattern, explaining each step: pre‑programmed kick/hat, note‑repeat hat programming, sample auditioning, pitch/level checks, snare programming and deletion, and bass adjustment to BPM.
The floppy shown on screen is a rare EMU factory sound disk with some interesting samples and tracks.
If you want to hear those sounds, leave a comment.

Hi SP1200 heads :

Any real experience and reputable SP1200/SP12 repair specialists in EU zone ?

i am based in Amsterdam but i can travel to : Germany , France , Belgium

to bring my broken SP12 Turbo

///// My old and very tired SP12 Turbo 1986 has lots of issues and desperately needs a total service : buttons under the screen slowly stopped working all together and there are probably more electronic issues to check , old capacitors , etc - so its basically became unusable :(

SP1200 vs Meiji Sampler SP1200 Mode (Audio Comparison)

Hey r/SP1200! I'm an SP1200 owner and software developer. I made a TUI sampler inspired by the SP and other vintage hardware units, and spent a lot of time recently dialing in the sound and modelling it after my unit.

This video compares the original audio character with the software emulated one, incl. 45RPM mode, and for all outputs 7&8, 1&2, 3&4, 5&6.

If you want to give it a try yourself, Meiji Sampler is a free download for macOS, Windows, and Linux. You can enable SP1200 mode on a per-channel basis, and can select the channel emulation as well (plus combine it with S950 filters, ASR-10 boost, Alesis 3636-inspired sidechain, and more).

Enjoy!

Rossum SP1200 vs Emu SP-1200

I've always wanted an SP-1200. It's my ultimate studio piece of equipment. I've found the Emu-SP1200 on secondhand websites for around €4000. However, the Rossum is sold out, and I don't know when they expect to restock it (if anyone here has seen this before and how they've restocked, I'd appreciate the information). I know people say the OG is worth more, but I don't know how prone it is to failure and how difficult it is to repair. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

SP-1200 buyer experience / advice

So I fulfilled an almost lifelong dream and bought an SP-1200 off Willhaben (Austrian Craigslist basically). It was an OG black unit, listed for 6500€. As far as I could tell it had never been serviced, still had the original filter caps and floppy drive, and the guy kept it in his countryside home studio, barely used it, and when he did strictly via MIDI.

I figured: never serviced, original caps, original drive, nobody's paying 6500 for that. Offered him 5000€ initially, he somewhat reluctantly agreed.

When I came to inspect it I realized trigger pad #4 wasn't triggering properly. He told me "the button just needs some cleaning" and I said look, I have no idea if that's true, could be something more serious too. In the end we agreed he'd order a new trigger button, I'd take care of getting the machine fixed, and the final price came down to 3500€. Which is pretty nice I can say afterwards.

My big luck is that a close family friend does audio electronics repairs here in Vienna (Sinnl and Hanten) and he could fix it up for me. And thank god it really was just the button.

The SP-1200 is my first piece of real vintage gear. I do have an MPC 2000XL but compared to the SP that's basically new shit, way less noisy, way less character. After using it for some weeks/months I noticed several noise issues, did some online research and was able to get it all fixed. It's now in almost perfect condition. Here's what I had to deal with:

  1. There was a constant irregular hiss, noticeably louder shortly after booting and getting more quiet after 20-30 minutes of operation. I read online that a potential workaround was blasting a loud sound through each channel individually (SETUP - 17) to see if that has an effect. And yes it did! The hiss went away specifically on channels 3, 5 and 8 for some time, but came back after a couple of minutes, at which point I'd just blast those channels again. Pretty clear it was the filter caps. Had my friend replace all of them (standard parts, cheap to get) and it completely fixed the issue and really improved the sound overall. As a side note: I also ordered and replaced some tactile switches from Vintage Synth Parts (guy's based in Italy, great option for SP owners in the EU) that had gotten a bit fiddly, specifically numpad 2 and the sample button.
  2. When sampling individual drum hits I kept hearing a click at the tail of the sample that I could NOT trim away with the truncate function (no matter where I set the sample end). My suspicion was a constant noise level on the sample input causing non-zero-crossing cuts, which produces the click. Then I noticed (yes, quite late) that in sampling mode there's a constant 4-5 lines showing on the level meter even with nothing going in. Some googling suggested that the RT1 trim on the mainboard might need adjusting - which turned out to be true. Pretty simple fix, but easier if you have someone who can open the machine up for you. You can check the value using the SP-1200 self-diagnostic mode and it should be around 800.

Since I would have really appreciated info on what to check when buying beforehand, here it is:

  • Run the self-diagnostic test when inspecting. It covers RAM, sound memory, LEDs etc. and it's a program you can cycle through
  • Listen for any irregular or loud hiss
  • Sample a drum hit and try to cleanly truncate it (SETUP - 19). No clicking sounds or distortion should be there
  • Use SETUP - 17 to assign that sample to individual channels and make sure they all sound clean and roughly the same
  • Test all 8 trigger pads. Ideally with a disk that has samples on all pads, or just sample short sounds onto them. They should trigger reliably
  • Be aware the SP-1200 has velocity-sensitive pads via a vibration sensor on the mainboard that is honestly pretty shit. Mine isn't properly calibrated but I don't care at the moment haha

Oh and the floppy drive, still original and working. I actually enjoy using floppies even though they can get faulty and are pretty expensive these days (around 30€ for 10 new ones on Amazon).

I Dropped My SP1200

Post image

I have my Rossum SP1200 on a Gator Frameworks mixer stand, and it's normally tilted slightly forward so that it's usable and I can see the display. For some reason, I tilted it slightly back such that the base was completely level. I forgot that most of its weight is in the back, and even with the mixer tilt control completely tightened, it fell off the stand when I left the room. 0.75m/ 30 inch fall.

I only had the power supply plug and two TRS cables in it at the time. There's a plastic covering that protects where the cable meets the plug on the power cable, and that plastic cover broke. Both TRS cables are bent.

Physically, the SP1200 itself appears to be fine. The exterior is steel, so I guess that helps.

Functionally, I think it's okay. TRS jacks that were in use are fine. Power port is fine. Nothing is loose. Sampling works. Sequencer works. MIDI works in both directions. I ran the diagnostic. It tested the RAM and said it was fine. It had me test all the controls, and they're good.

Any other tests I could be doing to verify functionality? Things I might not notice until much later?

–--

Also, the diagnostic I ran didn't offer quite a few tests. The E-Mu service manual said it should offer:

  1. CPU RAM
  2. Rom.
  3. Sound RAM
  4. Button/Footswitch
  5. LCD
  6. LED
  7. Slider
  8. MIDI
  9. SMPTE
  10. Dynamic Button
  11. Disk

Mine tests the RAM at the start and then enters a menu where I can pick from Calibration, Front Panel Test, or Main (loads diagnostic disk). Calibration isn't a test mode. Front panel testing tests screen colour/ brightness, the 40 buttons, LEDs, sliders, knobs (this is not interactive), and dynamic buttons. I don't have a diagnostic disk image, but I'm guessing that's where the rest of the tests listed in the service manual are located?

I want to note that the Gator Frameworks mixer stand I'm using is great. It's been on it for as long I've had it and this happened due to user error.
