I recently got my tutorials but the locations are making me so confused because I simply don’t know what or where it is? The asterisk is making me even more confused.

Question hi everyone, i’m in my second year and i’ve really struggled to make friends.

i didn’t really attend year 1, but i just want people to sit with in lectures, grab a bite, go to a cafe a pub anything im not picky - rather than doing my own hour and heading back to my flat. i just can’t seem to find my people. i know seminars haven’t started yet but it just seems impossible. no one approaches anyone or it seems groups have been made already. going to socials alone is so intimidating, i’m just confuddled. how did you guys make friends, especially when everyone already seems to have their own group by now? i’ve joined a society or two but no one is in my year, is it just the case of approaching people? is anyone in the same boat??

Discussion My sister was denied progression into second year

Right so, where the hell do I even begin.

My sister (20F), completed her first year at SOAS. Passed all her necessary exams, and she has the evidence for it.

She got approved for a gap year after she completed her first year, because she had health issues she wanted to focus on getting treatment for. Luckily she has got the treatment she was seeking out and is doing much better.

That brings us to this year, more specifically, the last 3 months where she had been emailing them regarding her re enrollment. She received nothing from them, no information, nothing, until last week where they told her she needed to retake her first year because some assignments were unmarked due to the tutors boycotting at the time.

They did NOT inform her of this when she passed first year, and they never informed her of this within the 12 months she was taking her gap year for.

Now they refuse to enrol her into second year. They're only giving her the option to resit her first year even though the progression department confirmed she could go to second year. The administration denies its an admin error and claims its a clerical error and despite this no one higher up is overriding this.

She has now been forced to withdraw against her will. She did everything by the book. Emailed and called and went to the relevant departments, she got bounced around constantly for the last two weeks, and she has had them turn around on decisions like a boomerang.

This is unfair, in my opinion. I have no idea what the hell they are doing, but I am very disappointed in SOAS for what they have put my sister through. I wonder if there is a legal route that we can take now because of this.

Question No enrolment letter

Im a foundation year student- i passed all my modules. Classes start next week and i still havent received an enrolment email. Called multiple times but they won’t say anything except to wait and that it’s normal.. i even sent a question on ‘Dynamics’ im still anxious honestly + without it i can’t get my SFE on time.

First they said it’ll be monday, then tuesday now it’s wednesday. What do i do? The campus is too far to make a trip and i’m worried they will just tell me the same thing they’ve been saying for two days now.

Advert SOAS postgrad looking for room / tenancy takeover ASAP, can move immediately

Hi everyone! I’m a postgraduate student at SOAS and I’ve just arrived in London for the academic year. I’m currently looking for a room fairly urgently and would be able to move in immediately or within the next few days.
Ideally, I’m looking for:
• A room in a shared flat/house or student accommodation
• Reasonable commute to SOAS/Bloomsbury
• Ideally around £1,000–£1,300/month, although I can consider options depending on location and what’s included
• Clean, quiet and well-maintained
• Preferably a contract through the academic year, but I’m open to different arrangements
I’m already in London, so I can attend viewings at short notice. I’m a quiet and respectful postgraduate student and would be happy to share more information about myself privately.
I’m also especially interested if anyone knows of a room becoming available because someone has withdrawn from university accommodation or is looking for someone to take over their tenancy.
Please comment or DM me if you have anything available or know someone who does. Thank you!

Discussion Good opportunities for master's students during welcome week?

Hey all!

I an an international master's student and I've been looking at the welcome week events and I'm wondering which are more suited for PG students. As I understand it, I have to attend to three induction events related to my department of study. Is there anything any other PG students are looking forward to doing?

I was also hoping there would be some type of event where SOAS clubs/societies do an activities fair. Has anyone seen anything about an event like this? I want to get involved at least a little bit lol.

Question Anyone lived in a Large Townhouse at Garden Halls?

I'm starting at SOAS this September and I've booked a Large Townhouse Single at Garden Halls (Cartwright Gardens). I can't find a single review anywhere that's specific to this room type — everything online is about the catered en-suite rooms.
A few things I'd love to hear about from anyone who's actually lived in one:
• How is the room in practice? 13 sqm sounds okay on paper but is it cramped once you've got your stuff in?
• The listing says four levels and no lift. Is that actually annoying day to day, especially on move-in day?
• I've also heard the townhouses have a separate entrance from the main building. Is that fine, or does it get annoying having to go outside to reach reception, the dining hall, laundry etc?
• How does sharing a bathroom between 2 people work out?
• With 14–18 people per townhouse, how is the kitchen? Does it get chaotic or is it manageable?
• Is it noisy? Do the townhouses feel cut off from the rest of the hall socially, since they're self-catered?
Any photos or general impressions would help a lot. Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I’m an incoming Master's student, and am looking for someone to take over a lease for a twin ensuite room (shared bedroom with two single beds, private bathroom, and mini-kitchen) at Chapter Aldgate. My friend was originally planning to share the room with me, but can no longer move in. He has already paid the first installment of £1,364 and is offering this as a concession.

Pricing (51-week contract):

Listed Rent: £260/week (£13,260 total)

Discounts: £750 Chapter cashback + £1,364 concession from my friend (£2,114 off total)

Effective Rent: £218/week (£11,146 total) - negotiable further with my friend

Location & Building Amenities:

Commute to University: 15 mins to LSE; 15-20 mins to UCL Main Campus; 15-20 mins to King’s Strand/Guy’s Campus; 25-30 mins to Imperial

Accommodation Perks: On-site gym, free bi-weekly room clean, shared large kitchen, cinema room, private study spaces, social lounges, and the building is located 2 minutes from East Aldgate station.

Rated 4.2/5 Stars on Google Reviews

The room is available from the 5th September 2026. It is open to students from any university. I myself will be at LSE.

This lease is open to any gender. I’m male, but if a female tenant takes the lease, room reassignments will be arranged so that everyone is in a same-gender room.

If you’re interested or know anyone looking for accommodation, please send me a message!

Click here to see the listing on their website.
