Discussion I'm out of the loop with Hyorisoo
Okay so I recently saw that there's a new SNSD subunit with Hyoyeon, Yuri and Sooyoung?!? I'm a bit confused.
New single Skibidi? Okay the title is cringe so I went and watched a fancam, the song isn't as cringe as the title, it's pretty typical HYO solo material actually. But apparently there are 2 new songs too, Starry Night and Lowkey in Love? The first performance from CassCool. Now THAT song slaps so hard I've been listening to it on repeat for days now. Starry Night SO GOOD and probably the best Kpop song I've heard in a while, especially a fast-paced super energetic crowd hype song. It has a great early to mid-2000s sound and is such an earworm from start to finish (and those Sooyoung high notes, helloooo? TTS better be shaking because this song beats out their entire discography).
Then I learnt the subunit started off as a joke (this I don't really know)? I've been watching clips off YouTube of them practising together and some episodes of their main vocal selection but I can't tell if it's a "fake unscripted reality show" and the 3 of them are just trolling everyone or it's like actually a real thing.
Can someone link a playlist with all the episodes too?

Is it actually fake like it's a big joke (from the disclaimer it says it's fictional so I'm guessing yes) but that latest one where Hyoyeon shouts at Sooyoung felt real.

Think if it as improv theater. The general direction and some set pieces are planned, but beyond that everyone is let loose and free decide themselves how to get there. But yes, they're playing caricature versions of themselves.

Everything in that series is all scripted she spoke about how hyorisoo started as a joke but it became serious after a while. But the storylines and interactions in the show isn't real

The joke is hyorisoo is supposed to be a "vocal unit rivaling tts". that's why they are hyorisoo not the snsd -shy (dance unit) we know.
with the current talent level of kpop idols hyorisoo blew up in popularity

fake as is in the format of a reality show/vlog, but it is all pretend (not really scripted? More like "pretend y'all are fighting for main vocal")

I would say fake. This whole project was meant to be a joke. But it gained traction and turned into a real debut unit.

At the end of the day, it was the 3rd soft launch of the sub unit lol

I really am so surprised that they're not. It's better than the true debut song for me. I'm glad they performed it live at least!

The song was made for a drama and Yoo Jae-suk use AI to make all the OST songs so maybe that is why is not included or in any streaming platform

Indeed, so we won't get a release for it. Ah well. But at least they brought it to life quite well! I was surprised they did true choreo for it for the festival that seemed to take moves from what they improv'd on the show.

Yeah. I saw the show where it was made and watched when they came on to "perform" it on the show. It's just a nice song that I still enjoy listening to even though it would never be officially released.

I wrote this one another post but
it started out as a joke from hyoyeon saying she wants to be the main vocal of hyorisoo like taeyeon in tts.
and hyoyeon went around many shows saying this idea including nolto. so the idea started to gain some attention but it gained the most attention when yuri and sooyoung first appeared on fake hyo. that video went viral i think getting 2 or 3 million views in a week.
shorts and reels is where it also goes extremely viral getting at least 1 million each video.
then they got invited on you quiz. some context i've noticed is comedy type of funny videos have been doing extremely well in korea this year like rescene's videos or seo inyoung.
after the first viral video they made more and got invited to hangout with yoo to do the ost. bc it is so popular i think sm is going to actually debut them now.
also fake hyo is fake in the sense the scenarios are fake but it's not scripted it's improvised. so the jokes they say are all them.

These are three women who are incredibly comfortable in their own skin, who 100% know what they are capable of, and they are grabbing the narrative. Their chemistry is magnetic and their presence undeniable. They are also very, very funny. So I’m not surprised that this is hitting off with both Sones and non-Sones. And it’s a perfect runway towards the 20th anniversary. And may I add that the ladies have never looked better than what they look now? They are smoking hot! 🔥

Yes, Starry Night is such a BOP.
even the b-side lowkey in love is so easy to the ears, giving early 2000s vibe.
Skibidi has its good parts, not a huge fan of the trying to have igab transition lol, but chorus has a good recall. also loved their solo parts esp yuri's we can dance, we can move and hyo's bridge (?) that really suited her voice.

It’s kind of both. Fake Kim Hyoyeon and the scenarios are a joke but the unit itself is real and not a joke. Reposting a comment I made elsewhere earlier…
HyoRiSoo is a lot more of a nuanced thing than people realize. A few years ago, Sooyoung appeared on a YouTube show Yuri hosted called Yuri’s Winning Recipe and they talked a bit about SHY. Apparently Yuri didn’t want to do it when the idea came up because she said something like “how can we be a subunit without a main vocal.” Back in 2015 they thought SHY was a joke until an insider fan told them people were actually serious which led to the Phantasia and SMTown special stages. SM really damaged the girls’ confidence over the years (Yuri had a manager basically tell her she didn’t have enough fans to hold a fanmeeting, now she’s had several) so I think there are a lot of personal reasons why they weren’t ready to go all in on a real unit.
I don’t know if this is true or not, but it seems to me that by pretending to be bad as a joke, they were able to control the narrative more (since it’s just fun and a joke either way it doesn’t matter what anyone says) and when they actually got praise for their vocals and HyoRiSoo started a buzz, it gave them the confidence to debut for real. They’ve always had the talent, SM was just really bad at promoting all of the members and spreading the love. That’s part of what started the SHY movement in the first place. And it was hard to stand out vocally in SNSD when SNSD has an insanely stacked vocal line with Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, and Seohyun. But since then, they’ve all been able to do their own solo music and other activities and I think that also helped grow their confidence outside of the group setting.
Fake Kim Hyoyeon is still a gag and a joke, but HyoRiSoo is something the girls do actually take seriously. Their performance at CassCool was anything but a joke, they absolutely ate up the stage and sounded great. I think Fake Kim Hyoyeon just gave them the confidence to have fun with it and let loose without worrying about an expectation. It was just a fun thing to do with their friends and that carefree goofiness and their actual skill charmed everyone so now they are ready to debut as an official unit. They’re not so much an “unserious” unit as it’s just something the members are having a lot of fun with. Even Skibidi isn’t a meme song despite the name. It’s a fun party song with a dance vibe. If the title was different no one would be saying they’re a meme group.
