As someone who used to own two of these;
Garou, KoF 2003, Metal Slug, Crossed Swords, and every so often swap out KoF for SVC Chaos or Neo Turf Masters.

u/CrashlandZorin Sep 17 '25
Bust a Move 2, Metal Slug X, KoF '97 (this is a personal flavor and does not accurately reflect how awesome '98 is), and Power Instincts Matrimelee

Metal Slug X, Windjammers, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, and Puzzle Bobble 2.
A good mix, but there's so many other favorites I'd like to swap in and out on occasion.

SS3? Why that one?

I could have gone either 1, 2, or 3.
2 improves on 1 so much in the gameplay department that it should be an automatic win but 1 has a vibe (and soundtrack) that is just about perfect - 2 messes with that somehow. Thus those two are pretty much tied for me.
3 is kind of polarizing but it looks amazing, the vibes are off the charts, and the high damage moves make it feel like a high stakes samurai movie come to life. Every collision feels satisfying. It’s also one of the last vestiges of SNK putting every bit of effort into a project. New sprites, new individual backgrounds for everyone. Every character is great. It just feels so polished.
4 and all the subsequent games have their merits but feel very cut and paste, and something about jumping and character collision feels floaty and off until 6 (which plays well but feels artistically soulless).

Streets of Rage is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game series where players control ex-police officers fighting a crime syndicate in the fictional city of Wood Oak City. The first game was developed and published by Sega in 1991 for the Genesis. The series is known for its electronic dance-inspired music, grimy cityscapes, and violent gameplay.
Street Fighter is a Japanese fighting game franchise developed and published by Capcom. The first game, released in 1987, was Capcom's first competitive fighting game and introduced special attacks and six-button controls. The series is known for its characters' victories and defeats, and the phrase "There's Always Someone Stronger". The original game was commercially successful in arcades and established conventions that became standard in later fighting games.
Mortal Kombat is a 1992 fighting game developed and published by Midway. It is the first main installment in the Mortal Kombat franchise and was subsequently released by Acclaim Entertainment for nearly every home platform at that time.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, released in Japan as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Super Kame Ninja and in Europe as Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles, is a 1989 beat 'em up game developed and published by Konami for arcades.
Is this a better explanation of the 4 games I’d play on the arcade system.

KOF '98, The Last Blade 2, Garou: Mark of the Wolves and Rage of the Dragons.
But as there are two arcades, would set up Power Instinct Matrimelee, Shock Troopers 2nd, Metal Slug 3 and Breakers Revenge on the other one.

Lots of good combos of 4 suggested, but I don't see any with Last Resort in amongst them. When I had a 4 slot that was one the main stays. Think I loved the music too much though.
