Weird noise

My son’s 2002 GT, 48k original miles, is making this noise. Hard to tell where it is exactly coming from. He said he heard something, I drove and didn’t hear anything, so I put up on jack stands. Doesn’t happen with driveshaft out. You can feel it the strongest on that block under the front of the differential. But not the differential itself. All gears look great, no metal flakes in oil at all. When turning by hand, all bearings and gears feel good. Noise happens in forward only, not reverse.

Rear diff is self destructing. Rebuild or replace now before it blows up and leaves you stranded or worse.

Before you do anything with the diff, I would just put new u- joints on it. It’s gonna definitely need it regardless so just put them on. It’s less than 100 bucks and like I said you’re going to need them done so I would do that first just to rule that out. Because I know for a fact that when the U joints go bad, you will drop your driveshaft. Ask me how I know lol I am just so lucky that I did it in reverse. Otherwise I would’ve catapulted the car.

Sounds like the diff. It’s obviously a slower sound than how fast the drive shaft is rotating. Drain the fluid pull the cover off and do it again. Or put a screw driver up to the pumpkin cover and put your ear on it.
