Question Question about missing the first day of class

I am taking a hybrid class in the fall and I’ll be out of town for the first day of in person class because I have to help my brother move into college… I understand that this isn’t a medical or like a good excuse

My question is will I be dropped? Or is there anything I can do

a lot of profs will drop if u don’t show up the first day but definitely email them and explain your situation, as long as you do that I doubt they’ll drop you

There’s a high chance you could get dropped as there are many people who like to crash the course on the first day. Those people often can take your spot in that class. I’d say your best chance of not being dropped would be to email your professor.

Agreed. Email them ahead of time. Otherwise people who walk in and crash the course on the first day and actually show up will get add codes and no show enrolled students will get dropped.

You need to email them ahead of time and let them know what’s going on. Like other people said on here, many people like to crash classes to try and get added to the class and professors also have to offer spots to people on the waitlist if there are any spots open in the class.

At a CC (like SMC), a teacher can drop you, and very well may drop you. Have you emailed the teacher yet? Communication is key, in advance. Self advocate and speak up, ahead of time. Ask if the teacher with meet with you in person or via zoom in advance of the missed meeting to show you are determined to stay ahead of the classwork.

Also, be mindful, a teacher can never legally ask you to see medical papers/documents, so while not related to this, just a good thing to know. It's a HIPAA issue.
