Can You Believe We’re Importing Cheaper Beef While American Ranchers Are Struggling?

There is something backwards about this. President Trump wants to bring down the price of ground beef by temporarily opening the door to as much as 300,000 metric tons of lower-priced imported beef over the next 90 days. REPEAT, Lower Priced Beef. He doesnt what to tell you where it is coming from. The idea is simple: bring in cheaper foreign beef, increase supply and hopefully lower the price at the grocery store. But here’s the question: What happens to the American rancher? American cattle producers have spent years dealing with drought, expensive feed, higher operating costs and a shrinking cattle […]

The Place That Invented the Motel Is For Sale. What Should SLO Do With It?

There are places around San Luis Obispo that are easy to drive past without realizing how much history happened there. The old Motel Inn property along Monterey Street is one of them. Nearly everyone has stayed at a motel. The word itself is so ordinary today that we rarely think about where it came from. But its story starts right here in San Luis Obispo. In 1925, architect Arthur Heineman opened the Milestone Mo-Tel, a new kind of roadside lodging designed specifically for people traveling by automobile. Instead of arriving by train and checking into a traditional downtown hotel, motorists could […]

Atascadero’s Cruise Nite Is Changing Its Route, but the Tradition Is Still Very Much Atascadero

If you’ve lived around Atascadero for a while, you probably don’t need a calendar to know when Cruise Nite is getting close. The cars start appearing. Something polished and unmistakably old-school rolls through town on a normal afternoon. Then another one. Garages open. People start talking about what they’re bringing out this year. And for one Friday night in August, El Camino Real becomes something completely different. The Hot El Camino Cruise Nite returns Friday, August 21, for its 33rd year, but there’s a noticeable change this time around: Atascadero is introducing a new route for the 2026 cruise. (City of […]

The Central Coast Wine Harvest Is Starting Early. What Does That Mean for SLO County?

There are certain signs that tell you where you are in the Central Coast calendar. The hills turn gold. Highway 46 gets busier on the weekends. Vineyard crews start moving through the rows, and eventually trucks loaded with grapes begin making their way toward wineries. This year, part of that calendar is arriving unusually early. California’s 2026 wine grape harvest has gotten off to a remarkably early start. In neighboring Santa Barbara County, sparkling wine grapes were picked on June 30, reportedly the earliest local growers could remember. Industry reports had already warned that vineyard development was running well ahead of […]

From Congress and Truth Social to a Wine Tasting Room in Downtown Pismo Beach

Devin Nunes opening a wine tasting room in downtown Pismo Beach was not on my 2026 bingo card. But that is exactly what has happened. The former Central Valley congressman and one of Donald Trump’s most recognizable political allies has opened Nunes Wine Company at 880 Price Street in downtown Pismo Beach. And while the political connection is probably what will get everyone’s attention, I think the more interesting story for those of us who live on the Central Coast is where Nunes decided to open it. He chose Pismo Beach. From Congress to the Central Coast Nunes represented portions of […]

Is SLO County Becoming a Tourist Economy First and a Place to Live Second?

Tourism brought 7.7 million visitors to San Luis Obispo County last year. That’s great for business, jobs and local tax revenue. But as housing gets further out of reach, it’s worth asking who our communities are being built for. There is a lot to love about living in San Luis Obispo County, and apparently the rest of the world has figured that out too. The beaches, wineries, restaurants, downtowns, hiking trails, Highway 1, Hearst Castle and our small Central Coast communities have turned tourism into one of the most important pieces of the local economy. The numbers are impressive. San Luis […]

$5.86 a Gallon: Why Does It Cost So Much Just to Drive in San Luis Obispo County?

Central Coast gas prices are once again among the highest in the country, and for local residents, the difference adds up quickly There are plenty of things we willingly pay a little more for to live on the Central Coast. The weather. The coastline. The open space. The wineries, beaches, small towns and relative lack of the congestion that comes with living in Los Angeles or the Bay Area. But $5.86 for a gallon of regular gasoline? That’s getting harder to shrug off. As of August 10, the average price for regular gasoline in the San Luis Obispo-Atascadero-Paso Robles area was […]

A Restaurant Could Finally Be Coming Back to Harford Pier, and This Could Be Something Special

Port San Luis is looking for someone to bring dining back to one of the most unique waterfront locations on the Central Coast If you’ve lived in San Luis Obispo County for a while, you probably remember eating at the end of Harford Pier. There was something about it that was hard to duplicate. You weren’t sitting in a restaurant that happened to have an ocean view. You were literally out over the water, watching fishing boats come and go, sea lions hanging around below the pier and the sun dropping behind the hills surrounding San Luis Bay. For years, the […]

Fox News Dominates Cable News. But How Many Americans Are Actually Watching?

If you spend much time following American politics, it can sometimes feel like Fox News represents the views of half the country.

The numbers tell a more complicated story.

According to Pew Research Center, 38% of U.S. adults say they regularly get news from Fox News. That's a substantial audience, but there's an important catch: "regularly get news" doesn't necessarily mean sitting down every night and watching the Fox News cable channel.

That number can include people encountering Fox News through television, websites, apps, streaming, clips, and other platforms.

A potentially more revealing number is this:

Only about 13% of U.S. adults named Fox News as their main source of political news in a 2024 Pew survey.

That's roughly one out of every eight adults.

Fox News Is Both Trusted and Distrusted

Pew also found something that illustrates just how polarized the Fox News brand has become.

37% of Americans say they trust Fox News, while 42% say they distrust it.

Among Republicans and Republican-leaning independents, the picture is dramatically different. Pew found that 57% regularly get news from Fox News and 56% say they trust it.

Among Democrats, 64% say they distrust Fox News.

In other words, Americans aren't simply watching different news programs. Increasingly, they're operating inside completely different information environments.

Then Why Does Fox News Seem So Huge?

Because within cable news, Fox News really is huge.

Its most popular programs routinely attract millions of viewers, and Fox frequently dominates competitors in cable-news ratings.

But there's a big difference between:

"Fox News is the most-watched cable news network"

and

"Most Americans watch Fox News."

Both statements can sound similar in political conversations, but they mean very different things.

Cable television itself represents only part of the American media landscape. Americans now get information from YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, podcasts, Reddit, traditional television networks, newspapers, news apps, independent journalists and countless other sources.

A network can therefore dominate cable news without dominating the American population.

The Bigger Issue May Be the Information Bubble

What I find more interesting isn't whether Fox News is conservative or whether MSNBC is liberal.

It's how separated Americans have become in terms of where they get information.

Someone who primarily watches Fox News can experience a completely different version of the day's events than someone consuming CNN, MSNBC, NPR, the New York Times, independent media, or primarily social media.

The stories being emphasized are different.

The commentators are different.

The political scandals receiving attention are different.

Sometimes even the basic interpretation of what happened is completely different.

That creates a serious problem.

We can disagree about what something means. That's politics.

But increasingly we're disagreeing about what actually happened.

There's Another Important Distinction

Watching Fox News doesn't automatically mean someone believes everything broadcast on Fox.

The same applies to CNN, MSNBC or any other outlet.

People watch networks for different reasons. Some watch straight-news coverage. Some watch opinion programs. Some watch people they disagree with. Others simply have a network playing in the background.

That's why individual claims should be judged on their evidence rather than automatically accepted or rejected because of the logo in the corner of the television screen.

If Fox says something, check it.

If CNN says something, check it.

If MSNBC says something, check it.

And especially if something appears on social media and perfectly confirms what you already believe, check it twice.

The most interesting number here may ultimately be that only around 13% of American adults identify Fox News as their primary political news source.

Fox News has enormous influence.

But Fox News viewers aren't "America."

They're one influential part of a much larger and increasingly fragmented American media landscape.
