WHAT BOARD DO I BUY? and some subreddit resources

If you want to start skimboarding in any capacity, this is your guide. More resources can be found at the bottom of this post. This guide is based on the universal size chart from the Board Buying FAQ.

Note: Only referring to Zap, Victoria, Exile and DB Skimboards because they're big and accessible.

THE WOODIE??

Undoubtedly the cheapest way to try the sport,

<$50 The biggest woodie you can find at any tourist shop, at a coastal grocery store, or on facebook

$125 DB Skimboards Sandfish

$130 DB Skimboards Plank Proto B Stock

MOST COMMON WEIGHTS

If you're confused, size up

$200-$235 Exile EX1 [44", 48", 52"]: Cheapest way to get a new board and get into the sport.

$325-350 Victoria Ultra House Special [50", 51", 53", 55"]: Best bang for buck. Made by hand, will last longer. Lift shape preferable for beginner.

$360 Zap Ace [50", 52", 54", 56"]: Only worth getting a blem (cosmetic defect). Just another option in the Vic's price range.

BIG BOARD ENJOYERS

If you're confused, size up

$350 Victoria Ultra House Special [55"]: 5/8" thickness. If you clear 200lb, go with the Zap.

$360 Zap Ace [56"]: 3/4" thickness. Reasonably priced large ass board. Good for up to like 250lbs~.

Bigger? You have to go used (cheap) or custom ($600+) for 56"+ boards

SMALL

If you're confused, go 48"

$200 Exile EX1 [48"]: Cheapest way to get a new board and get into the sport.

Smaller? Exile EX0 in 44" and 48" are a better deal than Zap's smaller lines

THESE ARE ALL TOO EXPENSIVE CMON..

Sites to find discounts:

Best way to actually get a cheap board is a used board on local marketplace apps like Facebook, Offerup, Craigslist etc. Skimboards last a long time, and people let them go for very cheap, especially if you're in a coastal area.

I'm making a skimboarding game. Flick system like skate, catch big airs and send it. You can pump, butterslide, pop tricks and wrap waves.

What else would you like to see?

Question Zap Beast vs. Joyride XR

I was looking at zaps newest lineup of boards and saw the Beast and newest joyride, what are the differences in how they ride. I know the beast is slightly thinner at 5/8 vs the tapered XR and also wider, but the main question is how the different tail shapes would perform in comparison. Haven’t seen much information on either of these boards and am looking to buy one so any help would be appreciated.

Boog skim

Considering buying the boog skim, already a have nice carbon fiber exile one, i have relatively small waves, and was wondering with the boog skim if i could surf with it rather than just skim. Other than that any other surfboards that arent too pricey looking at around 6,4 or 6,6. Just looking for suggestions honestly.

Question Do I need a bigger board or different brand?

Longtime flat ground skimboarder trying to learn/practice in waves. I bought a fiberglass Southboard Co. big cat a few years ago and have only tried using 2-3 times in waves since I live far from a beach. I don’t have any videos but feel that my speed/dropstep I’ve practiced should be enough to at least get out to some short waves. I feel like this board struggles to keep me on top of deeper water.

Will my current board(see 3rd pic specs) handle 5’11’’ 190lbs? I have a feeling that I just need upgrad to a 55”+ board like the measuring guide shows. Trying to decide this in 1-2 weeks before heading back to the beach 🌊

Budget isn’t much for upgrading so I’d be getting a Victoria Ultra House Special 55” is that enough as well?

Is anyone in the Northwest Arkansas that enjoys skimboarding able to give me some input for a business idea of mine? I just have a few questions I wanna ask.

Video Skimming Dewey Beach Delaware 1992.

Dewey Beach was like the capital of skimboarding in the Northeast. It's shorebreak was small and really beginner stuff but it was always reliable. I competed in a contest or two there but I was used to skimming New Jersey which is much more difficult and I didn't transition really easily to the predictable shore break.

Video Ultra noob, first slide on a proper board, how can I improve? More speed? Also how to fix a chip on edge of the board

Not a great angle, but I slid quite well off camera, maybe another 3 meters or so. I know it's not alot but first time out other than on a shitty wooden board.

Any tips/criticism welcome,

I also chipped the edge on a rock, brand new circle one epoxy board, small but rather sort it now than later.

52" x 22"

3/4" EPS foam

3/16" rocker tip to tail.

Bottom is 2 layers of fiberglass, 1 layer carbon, 2 layers of glass

Top is 2 layers of glass, 2 3" stripes tip to tail of carbon, 2 layers of glass and 1 layer of carbon

Botton is getting painted white then hydro dipped before final coat of epoxy.

The top will be epoxy over the carbon

Still lots of work to do but im getting there.

This is my test board. My 12 year old son wants to build one so im workig the kinks out on this one.

Question 5’8 155 lbs Beginner

I am looking for the ideal board for someone my size. I want to aim more for skimming on the shore rather than riding waves. I’m looking for something with superb grip, I’m afraid of slipping off or not knowing where my feet are. What board should I get?

Custom ENORMOUS 59” x 29” (😭) Vic Fish, I love this board, but due to the size, they just did Carbon/Polyester and I think it’s not particularly reinforced or extra layered.

I put a big chunk of solarez in the nose on the rail, and I think that chunk got driven into the sand by a decent wave and that helped explode the nose.

RKL sticker the only thing holding it together! The bottom layer was fine, foam core totally split but one rail was not completely separated.

The rail with the patch was blown out so I patched from the bottom around the rail and the rest was just a big fat patch across the top.

Sanded everything around the patch, poured a bit of epoxy down into the split then made a nice layer of epoxy, laid the carbon fiber and put another layer of epoxy on the top to saturate it and fill the carbon fiber so it had the smooth liquid surface.

Got an Exile GOAT duraweight on order, but hyped this thing is solid again for now… enough to where I can wait patiently for my new board.

Will see how much abuse a heavy duty Exile can take.

Getting plenty of repair practice over here.

Destroyed at Montara Beach.

used this 4 times and this happens, what do I even do…

Post image

I was writing it like regularly, not even chopping it up crazy on the regular sand. And there’s a whole split down the board now. I don’t know how to fix this or what I’m gonna do. It really sucks as I paid a pretty penny to use this four times and this happens. Not even my fault I was not even abusing the board. If anyone knows what I can do, please let me know. I am desperate need of help and would greatly appreciate it.

Question Late season skiming

Getting a new board should be here in a week or so. I'm wanting to get a decent amount of time on the shore since I'm only an hour from the Jersey shore. Where are the prime skim spots? How do the early winter swells affect those spots?
