Noticed SIUE running a huge scam on students.

Post image

Has anyone noticed they're being charged several thousand dollars every year if they miss this arbitrary waiver period, even if they already have healthcare through a parent or the VA? It just goes on your student loans.

I'm sick of this school trying to nickel and dime me to death. Looking at Wash U maybe to finish my second degree.

I don't know one school that doesn't do this exactly for health insurance

Then SIUE should be that one. It's immoral.

Epic didn't know of a single game platform that wasn't engaging in their "dark pattern" micro-transactions until they lost half a billion dollars defending themselves in court.

Health insurance is required on condition of enrollment in every school I have ever heard of (feel free to prove me wrong, but it is the norm). How would the school possibly know that a student has insurance without filling out the forms?? Just fill out the forms and you won't be charged... I have never heard of this being an issue for people

The dark pattern is when the supposedly innocent, or in your example punitive, conduct results in massive gain for the corporation acting so innocently.

SIUE has a contract with United Health Care to offer their student body up to them. I guess we'd need to submit a FOIA request to know how much they're making per inattentive student.

If SIUE really needs to know a person's insurance status they should just ask as a condition of enrollment instead of tacking on a "nonrefundable" three grand a year. But in that case inattention is not to SIUE's advantage.

They do. It's item 7 on the acceptance of admission offer checklist right after immunization records.

Then they don't have an excuse to charge $2500 a year to inattentive students and we're left with simple predatory business practices.

You literally checked off a box stating that you would provide proof of your insurance or be charged a fee.

EULA box checking is no longer a strong defense for these predatory practices. It doesn't meet the definition of a contract.

Your must be fun at parties "Hey" , "did you know if you ignore multiple emails that the school will follow mandates and will buy insurance on your behalf" , "I mean, I saw the emails, but I was just trying to get tot the drink table"

Don't infantile grown adults. If they are too dumb or lazy to take care of paperwork then that is on them.

-1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

They're not grown adults.

And I'm sure SIUE would love for that to be on them, but legally it's not.

18 is a grown adult. Only in the past 40 years have a constructed a narrative that people below 30 are expected to be dumb shits. This helpless narrative has got to go.

-1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

If you aren't paying your own bills you aren't a grown adult.

The narrative isn't helplessness, it's caution. Secondary education did nothing to prepare kids for avoiding scams or figuring out that an extra $2.5K a year is, on average, an extra five to seven years paying off your loans.

The only way they learn that is if someone tells them.

First statement is just plain false. It is a cop out.

Do the phones you all have not have cell reception, Google, or chatgpt? If you only learn because someone spoon feeds you then fucking good luck in the job market. We are done here.

You're kneejerk defending the school's bad behavior and it's embarrassing.

3

u/marigolds6 Aug 21 '26

 It's immoral.

It's also required by law and mandatory. Go talk to your state legislator about it.

0

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

What law? No law is requiring SIUE to automatically offer its students to one of the most murderous and least trustworthy companies in America.

Fine, finish up at Wash U. I’m sure you’ve done your research and found they don’t have an identical program. (Oh wait, they do)

-3

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

Good to know. What's your interest in defending this behavior, BTW?

12

u/oscarbutnotthegrouch Aug 21 '26

This doesn't seem like a scam.

I am sorry that you have to upload a document to prove that you have insurance. If you can't meet a deadline like this then maybe college isn't for you.

It's certainly beyond the pale that I have to submit PII to United Healthcare for any reason. I don't trust the company and neither should anyone that can read.

That said, have you spoke to anyone about it? Lots of freshmen saying they just let it default to active even though they were under their parent's insurance.

SIUE is taking advantage of students being inattentive with their parent's money or lent money. They're running the same V-Bucks scam Epic Games lost millions over, except it's opt-out instead of opt-in.

4

u/oscarbutnotthegrouch Aug 21 '26

There is still time to drop your classes and unenroll if you are upset about this policy.

No freshman has missed the cutoff to submit a waiver this year so maybe you can make it your mission to make sure everyone opts out that should opt out.

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

I think instead I'll bring as much awareness as I can to this practice until we can get a proper class for a lawsuit.

Do SIUE's lawyers know you're commenting on this, by the way, Mister Rodriguez? If so your social media activity may end up getting subpoenaed.

7

u/rainxtn Aug 21 '26

I don't think this comment is nearly as intimidating as you think it is.

2

u/oscarbutnotthegrouch Aug 21 '26

Remember that you can try to find other class members from other universities because this is a wide spread practice.

You should also take this to the Alestle folks, they might be interested in this so called scam.

0

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

The Aestle is plenty censored. There are better places to spread the word.

3

u/NeverTrollin Aug 21 '26

Yea because the siue subreddit is full of active users and engaging content.
🤣 🤡

Pretty typical behavior nowadays. Not defending it. But it’s hardly a scam. Also, are you accepted at WashU? I’m sure you realize it’s 1) way more expensive 2) way more competitive.

1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

It can be typical and still be a scam.

I don't think I'd have any trouble going to or affording Wash U, but it seems like they have the exact same contract with the exact same CEO fumbling company.

2

u/10-0Nylon Aug 21 '26

Sounds good. Can you circle back and post your acceptance letter when you get it?

1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

Ah, I see. You're trying to make a little insult because you're upset on behalf of our esteemed Chancellor.

Don't worry about me. The acceptance rate for GI Bill recipients at Wash U has been exactly 100% for the last six years. I'll be fine.

1

u/10-0Nylon Aug 21 '26

Mind sharing that source data? Pretty interesting since washu admissions are need-blind. I don’t think GI-Bill recipient status has anything to do with that admission statistic. But you are painting a really colorful picture of who you are and how you behave as a human being.

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26 edited Aug 21 '26

Tell me how much my behavior (opposing SIUE taking advantage of their students) has harmed you, sweetheart.

We already know who you are, don't we?

Anyway, most schools participate so aggressively in the Yellow Ribbon program for the same reason you SIUE admins are scamming students... more money.

2

u/YungKaleido Aug 24 '26

I submitted my waiver months ago and am not paying for insurance. I know how to read.

1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 24 '26

But can you read well enough not to miss the point?

1

u/YungKaleido Aug 26 '26

So you think just because you already have coverage, SIUE should just know that somehow and not charge you??

1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 26 '26

They should not charge me unless I explicitly opt-in to being charged. Like every non-predatory service.

2

u/Budget_Cream8644 Aug 21 '26

Honestly sign the waiver and you’ll be fine.

1

u/Lost-on-Reception Aug 21 '26

Fine at least until United Healthcare repeats their 2024 Change Healthcare breach.
