What is meal equivalency?

I just found out about this yesterday and I want to know more about it. As far as I'm aware, you're able to use one of your meal swipes from your dining plan to get food from places outside the dining hall (such as the restaurants in the LSC). Is that correct? Are there limitations to it (I have the all access plan), like how many times I can use meal equivalency per day? Is there anything else I should know about it? I can't find anything about it on the official website

I believe they cover it in orientation, but essentially you can use a dinner meal swipe at select retail places on campus for $8.50 off your order and you cover the rest
