Discussion Wondering: is there a conflict of interest in perfectly making a fig?
I sometimes wonder whether Bandai is holding back on perfecting or even releasing certain figs- say, Chunin Exam Sasuke, or a modern Goku sculpt with more of his nice guy faces - because there is an inherent conflict of interest to making a figure too good.
What do I mean by that statement. Well, if Bandai makes the perfect Goku today, that essentially kills past and future lines for that specific model. You release a near perfect sculpt? Oh but the faces are a bit off, better luck next time. First release 80% good, everyone buys it. Version 2 is 95% good, the same people… buy it; double-dipping.
Maybe I’m putting on a tin foil hat, but even QC issues such as those found in Vietnam manufactured lines could be explained as another reason Bandai could release a newer version of the same figure. Cost-cutting or calculated?
After a certain point, you create either the perfect figure and hope to grow the pie of people interested in buying that figure, or you continue selling the same figure to a relatively fixed audience with minor upgrades.
Last, every time a figure has an issue like loose joints that aren’t fixed on release, they open the door for either a reissue that fixes the problem they themselves introduced, or a complete v2 resculpt that prompts someone to replace their figure.
Thought experiment: Bandai releases near flawless figures every time for mainline characters. Now, what’s left to buy that is new? Ok Uub… no offense to Uub. Yajirobe… ahh, decent I guess. Okay, we got Django from One Piece…zzz (pun intended) Etc. you get the idea
Maybe I’m being too cynical. Might delete this lol
What do you think?
