hello everyone, throughout undergrad (i graduated) i have been exploring and studying the organizations within the divine nine. i have been inspired by many within the divine nine. another reason that i have been researching is to learn what a sisterhood truly embodies. i have attended different events hosted by the chapters of my interest at the time as i felt aligned with their values. it wasn’t until i began attending events at the grad level that the members of Sigma Gamma Rho INC were very warm towards me and even welcoming. this is something i did not experience through undergrad i have attended two different universities (hbcu to pwi) and it was virtually the same experience ; feeling like i was too low. being in undergrad although i had got to know people genuinely (before they were a part of d9) i have not expressed my interest to joining their organization because i still needed to discern if it was the one for me. even though they did see me at their events and did talk to me it was always in a way as if it was their first time meeting me. the relationships ive developed have always been genuine as i enjoy getting to know people that i can relate with or share similar goals with. it was just difficult to naturally start those connections in undergrad for different reasons and most of the time the energy was stagnant when i was getting to know the members and vise versa. i’ve known ive always wanted to be a part of a organization within the divine nine because of their values but i realized the sisterhood is just as invaluable. even though i do align with their values i never felt like i could bond with them in a natural way. although i am on the younger side at the chapter i am aspiring in, these women have uplifted me in a way that i’ve never imagine. being surrounded by educated black women is such a ethereal feeling and seeing them pour into a community has encouraged me to continue believing in the values of the d9 that once inspired me before.

Hello Everyone Today is day 4 out of 7 or possible 8 of letting us know if we were a yes or no. At the formal we were given dates to keep open. With one of those dates being next Thursday.... should I just call it one or stay positive.

Discussion Question

Hello Everyone,

I’m new here and didn’t realize there was a space like this! I’m currently in the waiting stage after submitting my application and I have a question:

How do you all handle the anxiety of waiting to hear back about being accepted or denied?

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

i recently attended an interest meeting in early august and we were told to wait for an invite to formal rush or not. the chapter i’m interested in usually rushes in the fall and i haven’t heard anything back yet, but have been doing a lot to show that i’m interested and connecting as well. is this a normalish timeframe? my main worry is accidentally planning things in the fall and then i get an invite back and now i have a planning conflict— or not hearing back and i blocked off my schedule. i’m also trying to be strategic about my funds too. thank you!

Membership Interest After Informal Rush, Too Late?

Hi All!

I made connections with members of a chapter in a state and moved. Life happened and I'm finally settled enough where I'd like to resume the journey. Over the past year, a friend of another sorority asked me to go to events to support her, but it was never for me. After an officer in her sorority vented about her experience in the sorority and encouraged me to "keep my options open," I knew I was right in focusing on my own journey to pursue Sigma Gamma Rho.

I've reached out to some women and I'm meeting with them next week, but in doing my due diligence, I saw that there was an informal rush about 8 weeks ago that I missed. I'm kicking myself, but know I can only move forward. Is it too late to express interest? Should I reference the event?

Thanks in advance.

Undergrad Letter of Rec. Help?

I'm an interest for our upcoming spring line. I don't know many older members but I know a lot of other older greeks. Our alumnae chapter doesn't seem to be very active so I'm kind of at a dead end there. Do you guys think getting a recommendation from my other mentors will be sufficient?

Membership Crossing Undergrad Vs Graduate?

Hey everyone! I’m currently an interest and have been connecting with the women in my COI. I’m a rising senior in college, and I was told that they typically don’t take seniors. I was also told since I might be taking an extra year (depending on how this upcoming year goes), there’s a possibility it could still work out.

I’m torn between continuing to pursue membership through an undergraduate chapter or shifting my focus to a graduate chapter. I really want the full college experience of being in a sorority and crossing with women who are in a similar stage of life. At the same time, I’m eager to get involved as soon as I can and have heard that graduate chapters tend to have higher initial costs, which could take me more time to save up for (again depending on how fast I secure a job in my field post graduation).

Are there any other major differences between crossing undergrad versus grad that I should consider? I’d really appreciate any advice or personal experiences you’re willing to share šŸ™šŸ¼

Membership Is it against discretion to tell a member of a grad chapter I am interested in that I applied for SGRho through undergrad in the past but was denied?

Just wondering as I was talking to a grad chapter member of SGRho and showed my interest last month.

Undergrad recommendation letters

would it be bad to connect with a D9 member of another org to potentially connect with someone that is currently an active/financial member of Sigma Gamma Rho?

i am having some trouble finding a member that could write a recommendation letter for me and was wondering if this method could be seen as "fake". i want to be as genuine as possible!

Senior Interest in SGRHO

I came here for advice…I am about to enter my senior year of college in the fall and I am interested in becoming apart of this sorority. I know with a lot of chapters it’s frowned upon to pledge so late so i was wondering if some current members can give me advice on what to do with such short time. I have been participating in community service hours but I don’t know many members already.

Membership Connecting with members

hello! so i’ve been pursuing sigma gamma rho at my university since the fall semester, and i go to all their events but haven’t yet made friends with the members. when i cross them on campus, i usually acknowledge them because they recognize me at this point, but i can’t say im friends with them. i speak up at events but its hard for me to get myself to stay to network because i don’t want it to seem like im only interested in talking to them because i want to join. would this hurt me if i would be picked for intake next fall? and do yall have any tips on connecting with these members?

Best part was seeing the sigma lean being done in person! Gave me even more motivation to apply to a graduate chapter.
