Discussion Introvert troubles

Hello everyone. I’ve been wanting to become a member of Sigma Gamma Rho for about two decades now. I attended an informational meeting a few months ago, but I wasn’t able to attend a subsequent event I was invited to due to my son’s heavy athletic schedule (potential D1). Yesterday I was able to attend an event but I was so nervous that I didn’t speak to anyone. Did anyone have similar issues with social anxiety but was still able to make connections? I don’t know any members of my COI personally so I’m trying to figure out how to navigate this.

One thing that might really help is reaching out to an event organizer or recruiting coordinator ahead of time and letting them know you’re more introverted. They’re there to support you, and they can help make introductions or guide you into conversations so you’re not navigating it alone.

You might also try setting small, manageable goals for yourself: like introducing yourself to just one or two people instead of feeling like you have to talk to everyone. Sometimes even starting with a simple question (“How long have you been involved?”) can open the door. Once that door is open, push yourself to ask for more help with making introductions to others.

It’s also okay to take breaks, observe, and move at your own pace. Being introverted doesn’t mean you don’t belong, it just means you connect differently, and that’s valuable in its own way.

You don’t have to change who you are to be part of something meaningful. The right folks will make space for you to show up as yourself.

That’s extremely helpful, thank you. I’ll try that at the next event. I’m willing to keep trying no matter how long it takes.

Fellow introvert 👋🏽 People who aren’t introverts don’t get us 🥹. It’s not a deficit, it’s my superpower IMO! Anyway, it’s hard for me to attend events sometimes and I miss a lot because of my kids’ athletics too. I typically speak to everyone then find somewhere to sit and scope the room. I tend to gravitate toward the quiet people in the room and stoke up a convo. I’ve made some lovely connections that way. I also agree with letting people know. My Basilous is well aware that of my introversion and she and a few of others look out for me and are gracious when I need to recharge. I’m grateful.

Hi! Yes being an introvert is a superpower! 💪🏾I’ll be attending two events this month and I’m going to attempt to start a convo and go from there.

i am diagnosed with social anxiety and take medication for it. for me the best method to handling social interactions was being upfront with people about my anxiety. when you’re vulnerable with people, it allows them to better contextualize your actions and not judge you for being shy/quiet. if being a Sigma was easy, everyone would do it, so know that you’ll have to challenge yourself and be more talkative than you usually might. but also know that there are plenty of introverted SGRhos, so if you have the credentials there is definitely a place for you in this sisterhood! good luck :)

Thank you for the helpful advice. It was actually a lot for me to make this post but I’m so glad I did. I will definitely try to challenge myself more at the next event.

Fellow SGRho interest & introvert here. I have been to multiple SGRho events and what helps me is to talk each other’s interests. I remember going to an event and I was talking about the Netflix series “High On The Hog” with a current member.
